How to set up and use APSense iChannels

Go to the "iChannels" area by clicking on the "iChannels beta" Tab at the top of the page.

To Create an "iChannel" Click on the "Create My Own iChannel" which is on the right of the light blue band just below the main tabs.

You are now on the "Create iChannel" page.

"iChannel TAG:"

Place the name of your "iChannel" in this box.
You are restricted to a maximum of 20 characters (letters and numbers only) so use them well.

Make this name as descriptive as possible and try to use keywords.
As an example Bjschannel is not going to tell anyone anything and it is not going to help on the search engines either, where as lowcostwebspacenews is telling everyone including search engines that this is a channel for news about lowcostwebspace, it has words that may well be used as search terms ie

web space.
low cost web space.

So I have 2 possible search terms.

"iChannel Name:"

Here you have 50 characters that you can use here.
Note: Make sure you pre count them as it will let you type up to 99 characters but will cut off and display only the first 50 when you save your channel.

Again make this descriptive and include keywords.

example
here again I make sure that LowCost-Webspace is in the title and also the keywords affordable low cost Hosting
this gives me chances with searches on

Hosting
affordable hosting
low cost hosting

So now with just those two boxes I now have 5 possible search terms and all are relevant to LowCost-Webspace.

"Category:"

This is a single choice so select the one that your "iChannel" will be best suited to.

"iChannel Brief:"

Here you have 500 characters to play with but no UBB or HTML code just plain text.

Use this box to write a short description of what your channel is about.
Again here use keywords in the description.
So think carefully and write a readable description that makes sense and not just a string of keywords.

You can see how I have placed several keywords in my description by taking a look here
"lowcostwebspacenews"

When you have everything set up as you want it click on the "Submit" button. and your "iChannel" will be created. and you will be taken to The "My iChannels" page where you will see your "iChannel(s)".

"My iChannels Page
You can reach this page by clicking on the "iChannel beta" tab at the top of the page and then clicking on "View My Channels" on the light blue band just below the tabs.

With each "iChannel" you will see the title, description, and TAG name plus on the right you will see 5 options.

Publish News.

To post a news item to your "iChannel" Click on the "Publish News" link.
Note: You can also click on the "Publish News Buttons" you will find on the "View iChannel Report" page as well.

Clicking either of the "Publish News" options will take you to the "Publish News" Page.

At the top of the page you will see the "iChannel" TAG and the title so you can make sure you are publishing to the correct "iChannel".

Step 1

"News Title:"
Here you have 100 characters in which to create a good title for your News Item.
As always think keywords when creating it.

"News Brief:"

Here you have 200 characters in which to give a short description about the News Item you are publishing. Again try to think keywords when writing it.

"Step 2"

"News Content:"

You have two ways to "Publish a News item" for "iChannels".

"Use External Link"

You can use an existing Article you have already published and not just here in "APSense".
To use this method Click on the radio button and enter the full URL of the news article.

or

"Write your own Press News"
You can write a completely new article using either the design or the HTML options in the editor window.
Make sure you check the radio button for this option.

When you have completed which ever option you are going to use Click on the "Publish My News" Button.

"View Report".
This will take you to "View iChannel Report".
At the top you will see your "iChannel" TAG and the title followed by the brief description of your "iChannel".

Below that you will see the news items you have published

Example

The "Recipients" show how many have received the news item and the "Clicks" shows how many times it has been clicked on.
The Red X is there so that you can delete a news item if you so wish.

Click on your browser back button or on the "View My iChannels" to return to the "My iChannels" page.

"Set up API"

I Need to get more information on this item. I will update as soon as I have it.

"Edit iChannel"
Clicking on the "Edit iChannel" will allow you to edit the "iChannel Name", "Category", and "iChannel Brief".
Note: You can not edit the "iChannel" Tag.

After making changes click the "Save" button.

"Delete iChannel".
Self explanatory. If you want to remove an "iChannel" Click on the "Delete iChannel".

Bj, as ever, it's clear enough even for me! I especially like the bit about being able to put in the url of an article we have posted somewhere else. But will this help or hinder with the search engines? Seen so many posts lately about duplicate posting and am worried that if I put in the url of my blog, for instance, then the engines will see it as duplicate and I could do a bit of damage. Or will it help because the it is creating a link? Thanks.

Hi San, I think It should help as it will be a link to the original post rather than posting the same information again. Bj

I can see this is gonna be another dumping ground for boring affiliate ads =( 2 bad really, 'cuz it's a really cool feature imo.

I really look forward to your grand opening Peaceful. You are a great writer with always something interesting to say! I would say that the ichannel would be a perfect fit for someone like yourself who constantly adds new content, my point is that people like yourself who add fresh, original content will have to compete with those who copy and paste affiliate ads, just like the rest of apsense. And also compete with people who use the ichannels to advertise their webhosting services and other static services which are never updated and are really just clutter and belong in a classified section.

Peaceful  Senior  Dec 14th 12:33
Thanks, Bill! :) Your excellent instructional guide is of great use-- Surely all members who take the time to follow it and use their innate creativity, will be able to create successfully interesting Channels... I fully and happily accept personal responsiblity for making my Channel as interesting as possible! :) I can't wait to get to it! :)

Peaceful  Senior  Dec 14th 12:39
Thanks, Cat! :) I absolutely will try not to disappoint you or me... Or anybody else for that matter! :) I haven't seen you around lately and I hope that you are well! :)

Hi Cat, hm we are being catty today arnt we. If you have not figured it out yet. my iChannel will be about MY hosting services as well as my other services. and they will still carry articles that will help people. I have busted my a** helping people here in APSence for 6 months with almost no advertisng, and nothing in return. Most of the people dont even know I own a 2 and a half year established hosting company. despite all the help they have had from me. Dont you think its about time people found out just what I do do. Those that have got to know me and are looking for hosting hopefully will consider my company to host them. Now putting it bluntly they are MY iChannels this is MY group and if you dont like it you know what you can do.

Children, children - no fighting please! Play nicely. this is a very useful topic. SOME OF US NEED walking through the destructions on these iChannels!! Cat, take back what you said about people advertising low cost web hosting and BJ please recognise that Cat has a point! LOL It would be a real shame if the ichannels are abused in the same way the blogging options, like Digg, have been abused by certain gormless members here! BJ we cant do without you here and Cat it is great to see you back. And Peaceful I am convinced that your ichannel will be magnificent. A little fattening, but magnificent. OK and now the 64thousand dollar question - what are the ichannels for? Who sees them? IThey must be a great idea, because everyone is raving about them. Can someone please explain VERY SIMPLY -PLEASE This place is moving so fast that I am beginning to feel very DUMB!

Great job bj. I really appreciate your hard work. This will help greatly. I only had a little time to set mine up but I will go back and fix mine up when I get a chance.

bjantiques  Professional  Dec 15th 09:08
Hi Jenny, You are correct there are those that need the articles I publish to find their way around APSense which can at times be a daunting task. Unfortunatly thare are those that persist in publicly and privatly whinging and whining and putting down my efforts to help those that do neet it. These whingers and whiners find all my APSense posts boring. They have to realise I am making these posts for those that need them and find them helpfull not for those that find them boring. ok now that has been cleared up let me try to answer your question as to what the iChannels are for. The idea is that you can set up channels to which those interested in your iChannel theme can subscribe and so be kept up to date when you post something new. In the case if my iChannel I used as a practical example in this post. Those interested can subscribe and then when I announce anything to do with my lowcost-webspace hosting company, such as new services, specials if I decide to run any, or post more articles that are related to hosting, domains, registrants, etc they will be notified. The system cant be abused for the simple reason that if someone is just slamming out copy and paste ad crap then people will not subscribe so the owner will only cut their own throat by doing so.

OOOPs an addendum to my reply to Jenny, Who sees the iChannels? Anyone can. They dont even have to be a member of APSense to download the APSense Express and subscribe to any of the iChannels they are interested in.

Blessed are the Peacemakers, Great to see you again too Alas! I hope you are doing well. BJ, I think you are misunderstanding my intentions here. I believe your tutorials are very important and I appreciate your hard work. I also believe that your APSense tutorials would make a very good IChannel Feed and would have many subscibers. That is what a feed would be for imo, delivering interesting or useful information to users on demand. Good feeds would need to updated frequently and provide a fresh supply of interesting content imo. Examples would be new blog articles by some of the Great Bloggers here at Apsense, Possibly Marketing Lessons by one of the Experienced APSense marketers, Ezines of various varieties, etc. Of course these people who took the time to create this content should and are able to advertise within their feed to compensate them for their time. I'm really not sure who would subscribe to a webhosting feed or why, for the same reason I'm not sure who would call up AT&T and request more telemarketers call them. I mean, I'm sure your interested in the day to day drudgery of your business, but why would anyone else be? The problem, of course, is that as more and more of these useless "feeds" get added, it begins to get more and more difficult for the consumer to sift through all the crap to get to an interesting feed. This also discourages those who are able to provide quality feeds from even bothering to update, because the people who would be interested in their content won't be able to find it! I understand that you are able to attach 3rd party feeds to your ads, but this is really no substitute for the "homegrown" talent that will be squashed by the marketers. CatHead

Hi Cat, A 180 degree turn I have to say I have waited for for a long time. Nice to see you finally admit openly that my APSense help articles are of use. As it happens I have created a channel for APSense help which I will use as an extension to this group and to have another way to get this information to members. The one thing I have found though is you only see the last 5 posts when you subscribe so new members could miss the previous posts. As for who would be interested in my feed based around my web hosting service? How about potential clients looking for a honest company that gives personal service and is not out to sell them a limo when they only need a compact. You are also pre judging what my iChannel content will be. I am naturally not going to show my cards, that will become clear as I proceed. However to even suggest that I will use it only for advertising just shows how little you know me. Am I going to advertise? You darn right I am I am not going to continue running a charity here. I think I have earned the right to start trying to get some sort of payback for every thing I have put into APSense. Am I going to be advertising the latest and greatest BS mlm crap that has just been launched ? NO WAY. Check your self what I promote. You will find I promote only 2 things out side my own owned businesses and they are things that I have checked out carefully and feel are worth while. Mind you you will have to look carefully as there are so few ads from me - I think 6 to 10 would be a fair guess, and considering I have been here from day 1 (well day 4 actually) and was about the 350 th person to join APSense that is a very low ad count compared to the total number of articles and all the help posts and replies I have made over the last 7 months.

BJ!!!!!!!!!!! May be you are correct that "The system cant be abused" but I still think Cat has a point when he suggests that they could be used by a load of idiots copy and pasting ads. and then people will start thinking of them as just more ads and stop looking at them. and the good ones will get missed. I hope it will not happen, but have to recognise that i share his concern. It is not about YOU
