During the winter of 1914 German and allied troops had an impromptu "Christmas Truce". Started by German soldiers in the trenches setting out lit Christmas trees in front of their foxholes, the Christmas truce began with the singing of carols and steamrolled into gift exchanges, soldiers from both sides helping to bury their dead comrades and improvised Soccer ganes in the middle of World War I. The leadership however did not have the Christmas spirit and ordered the troops to shoot at each other. It seems the stars were in more danger the troops since a lot of ammo was expended shooting in the air. For more on this story

| I think this just shows the power of Christmas. I think it is a real testament that these men were able to connect to each other for that brief time.

| I recall hearing and/or reading that about both wwI and wwII ...there was a christmas truce and i have heard of the helpful holiday spirit that ensued.... such brave young men like the soldiers we have today
