Follow these step:
1: check all internal linking of your website & remove dead link.
2: First make custom 404 page and set on http access.
3: Redirect error page to another working page(302).

To resolve 404 pages sharing few steps below:

1. Take out the list of 404 pages with help of Xenu tool.
2. Either delete these pages or set redirection(302)
3. After doing this recreate the robot.txt file and sitemap.xml and upload both the fike on the website then submit both the file in webmaster too.
