I use wordpress as a content management system for many of my sites, though I do not process transactions or have memberships at my sites.

There are enhanced security plugins etc available and even commerce plugins and themes especially designed to facilitate online transactions.

I would certainly recommend that you at least try Wordpress Bronwyn..

Yes! I use Wordpress and completely love it! I will support them completely! I found that it was great way to go when buying my hosting for the first time and jumping into blogging for the first time.

Yes, I do use WordPress for many of my sites and sub-domains. However, to answer the second part of your question regarding security, I can suggest you to use the inbuilt Akismet plugin for filtering spam. Akismet is anyways free for personal use. Hope this helps
