Yes, I would consider it more than necessary. That is, if you want to break up the monotony of your sales page and keep the attention of your reader.

Necessary? Absolutely not. If you're selling a digital product, though, you should at least have an ecover created to represent your product. Many successful Internet marketers do not use a lot of graphics. Jason Fladlien, for example. It really does depend on what you are selling, though. Services usually sell better with less graphics, in my experience. It's more professional.

I'm inclined to agree with David Smith that graphics are not necessary for selling a digital product or service. It's the copy that sells the product, so your copy better be compelling. I know of at least three very successful marketers who do not use graphics but employ compelling copy in their sales letters: Jason Fladlien, Robert Plank and Matt Rhodes.

Graphic represents your brand, and depending on your area of expertise, you may or may not need it. The content needs to be quality, because that's your sales pitch to the reader. If you focus all your attention on the graphics, and fail to produce compelling content, then your efforts will be in vain.

A picture is worth a thousand words? I have noticed graphics can bring you lots of hits to your website it you use alt tags and describe them..
