Review on Open Office

Many people belive that starting up an online business is very risky.
Up to a certain point, well, it might be.
If you lack the knowledge and belive you can make it alone, well, get prepared for a long and raugh journey. How long? About 15 years! Yeap! Read it again and again, for as many times as you want!
Want proof?
Mike Filsaime. You know the guy? Have you heared about Butterfly Marketing? Yeah! HE is THE GUY! And in one webinar I attended some time ago this year, he stated that he has more than 15 years online. Want more names? Michelle MacPhearson, Lynn Terry, David Vallieres. Go search them on gurudaq.com. You'll understand what I mean.
So, what can we do?
First, is learn.
Second, is change your knowledge into VALUE.
Third, turn VALUE INTO MONEY.
For this, you need KNOWLEDGE AND TOOLS.
The first tool I recommend, is the office suite Open Office.
I use it to write my ebooks, articles, turn articles into ebooks, into e-courses and so.
If you like the articles I publish and the way they look, well, I simply Copy-Paste them from my ODT file called TheApSenseExperience. I write them in this file, format the text and then Copy-Paste the article into the online editor. That's all!
You maybe are asking yourself why?
Easy answer: Because in at most 2 months, I will have ewnough stuff for an eBook!
The only thing I need to do is make an eCover, insert it on the 1st page, build a 3D version of the cover, write a copy for it, setup an autoresponder and launch it online!
Are you still following me? What's that you are asking?
Well, a new info-product!
Wether is a FREE one or a paid one, I make it with OpenOffice! The module, is called OpenOffice Writer. A nice, full-featured word processor. Allows me one-click PDF export, allows me to export/import into HTML, and many other features you are familiar from MS Office. Only that MS Office is a commercial product, and each new version, requires new money! And a new OS, that requires even more money and a new mainboard, and more RAM, and a new more powerful CPU, and a new video adapter, and,... here you go!

After making a little market research to see the impact of the articles and the eBook, I might rewrite everything into an online course, and here is the 2nd stream of income.
Pretty easy, huh?!
Well, it should be. At least, after 16 years of happy computing and 10 years of surfing, actually it is!
And back to the office suite...
Why OpenOffice?
Because it is FREE!
And because you need to process your leads file you download from the autoresponder.
And you need some graphics for your site, also!
You process the .csv file with OpenOffice Calc, eventually, if you know Database handling, you can create even a database with OpenOffice Base, than manipulate the data in the leads table to get nice stats on your profficiency!
The graphics you need, might be processed with OpenOffice Draw, even more, you can make a slideshow with OpenOffice Presenter, and then make a webinar with it!
Pretty good I say, for a FREE product!

Mastering MS Office, is as hard as any other office suite. After 16 years in computers and literally thousands of softwares used, I think practice and a clearly defined goal, is the key to any success.
Thanks for passing by and leaving links to your sites! :)

Yeah, David, you're right! I have already a 9 years experience in using OO.org. In online business, it is useful for generating the following products:
formatted blog articles; eBooks; slides; slideshows; raw screens for webinars, via Presenter slides; stats charts; flowcharts; graphics; 3D text. There are many other uses, but this is only a showcase... :)
And again yes, the beginning, seemed like hell even though I had 7 years in computer business at the time I started. I admit, I'm a little bit the lazy kind, I like to squeeze my brains for any shortcut I can figure out to cut hard work and use mostly brains and lesser possible muscles! :D

Hi i,Serban I have speny 33 years in the computer Industry
Working for the British Government with the Ministry of Defence,so I have been in all the govrmeny buldingsAmerican Embassy, all the friendly Embassy. But that dosent make me an expery. As Sodtware changes so fast.I agree with you OfficeOoRg are as goog as Microsoft. What I was saying ,because everyone knows MS like the back of thier hand, they tend to ptefer Ms,its Daft there isa program that can be as good if not better. What Microsoft have starteg doing now with a lot of new computers, they are giving Word & Excel free fot Life on the compute.I have just bought a new desk top and it had the 2 for life the 0nes you need W & E on iT.I was able using free programs and tweaks to get my self, the whoke or Programs needed to get all the other Software Publisher the lot free.
But ,as I have said forme it was down to personell choice,Offic Org are Increasing, thier custommers.I whole heartly endorse Office Org I am Just Lazt. You can if you have the space run the 2 of them and see ehat you think.

Yes, I know about the "Free" Word-Excel. I also have them on my Dell Inspiron. Somewhere in the setup process though, it is stated that they are TRIAL versions. Which is very different from FREE. Using a FREE TRIAL version is something, and using a FULL FREE version, something different. Free trial versions are marketing tools that are hidden endorsments for paid products. Besides, for each OS upgrasde, the support for the previous version is ceased so you'll end up in an increase of the TCO - Total Cost of Ownsership. For instance, building a 100 computers network with Windows, costs you way beyond 20,000 USD, while building a 1,000 computers with Linux, costs you 0.00 USD. Should I mention the software licenses for the workstations, servers and so on?
Here is a different approach: We desperate need computer specialists capable of managing servers and networks. Instruction costs, are way beyond a young talent's range of affordability. And you know it wery well.
Using a MS platform, makes instruction so expensive that it is impossible to offer free trainings. On the other hand, on a Linux platform, the instructional costs are mainly the time needed to read, study and apply the knowledge contained in the manuals of all the software bundled in each distro. Actually, the most of my computer knowledge I have, i got it from studying online docs, and using Windows ports of UX software. OpenOffice, is one of them.
I use it since version 1.03 or so. I used it on Linux too, but I need video editing tools, and free video editing tools are still scarcy - generally speaking and on Linux, they still need lots of workarounds, mostly due to copyright policies for the compression tools (CODECS). Maybe in another series of articles I will speak more on that issue, NLE and video-editing to name it.
Unleashing creativity with unaffordable video tools, is very difficult, in my humble oppinion.
Even if AVID is somehow affordable (well, up to a certain point...), the training costs, are huge! Each main training module means some 10 DVD-sets, and there are at least 4 modules you need to master. We can go on with this discussion for tens of pagers so I'll stop here for now. Thanks for the opportunity to exchange views with you and the other members here! It is very nice from you!

IBM does. Lotus suite. Anyway, if you tested and MS Word & Excel are truely free for life, that means that they made a huge step ahead from the previous policies. And that is something that worths appreciation!
Thanks again for your valuable contributions here! :)

I use both. I have found that both OO and MS have their good points and bad. OO is better for use with Spreadsheets that I need to upload. Those I convert from Excel into OO and have never had a problem uploading a sheet while Excel tends to be 'unsupported' even those the site I work with says that it is.

OO Power point creator is very bland, and trying to use clip art with it is a pain in the rear end. MS gives a larger variety of options for customization and you can add photos and videos with ease. I have never believed in either/or, I believe in using what works best even if it is a combination of the two.

@ Cherryl, I must admit that you are true! :) "Aiwa, doesn't take sides. Aiwa keeps balance!". As for PowerPoint/ Presenter, yes PPoint is more convenient. For instance using the TreeView in OO is impossible so creating a FlowChart is a hell! There are workarounds, but... In a webinar, there are many aspects that get strighter to the attendees, if a flowchart is used. And in many other presentations, let's say more "classical" ones.
@ Ayojide, thanks!
