Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein that is 591 amino acids long, it also contains a carbohydrate moiety and is 70KD in molecular weight. Other names which it is also known as include: alpha-1-fetoprotein, alpha-fetoglobulin and alpha fetal protein.

AFP is predominately produced at the stage of neonatal and fetal development by the yalk sac and the liver. There is evidence to indicate that small quantities can be produced by the gastrointestinal tract.

Serum AFP levels are known to be higher in several malignant diseases such as: non-seminomatous testicular cancer and primary hepatocelluar carcinoma.
