Indian Railways is currently busy building an engineering marvel–the world’s tallest railway bridge on the Chenab River. The bridge is 1,315 meters long and 359 meters high, which is expected to be 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower when completed. When the railway bridge is completed, it will link the sections of the spectacular mountainous region of India’s northern Jammu and Kashmir state.
The construction of the bridge started in 2002, but the work stopped in 2008-09 because of the safety aspect of the passengers due to frequent high-velocity winds in the area. A senior Railway official claimed that the bridge under construction can withstand winds up to 260 kmph and its lifespan will be 120 years.
The extraordinary challenge lies in a large number of tunnels (totaling 63 km in length) and bridges (7.5 km) to be implemented in highly rugged and mountainous terrain, with the difficult Himalayan geology. The most difficult part is believed to be the crossing of the deep gorge of the Chenab River, near Salal Hydro Power Dam, by the Chenab Bridge.
