Working from home? 5 tips to make your home office work for you

by Alvina Jennifer Seo expert and digital marketing ex

Working from home certainly has its perks. Not only are you building your own empire from scratch, but the feeling of stepping out from the shadow of corporate business and making it on your own is both exciting and thrilling. Becoming your own boss, being in charge of your time and making money online are accomplishments that many of us hope to achieve.

Working from the comfort of your own home means that you’re probably in the fledgling stages of your business, with things like business rates, payroll, health and safety and even stop signs in the car park not yet in your remit. Despite this, you’re going to need a good, productive home office in order to work to your full capacity and keep you motivated.

Unsure of where to begin? Read on for 5 tips to make your home office work for you.

A good chair

Remember all those hours you spent at your old desk and how you’d complain of backache? Well, now you’re working from home you can invest in an office chair that works hard to keep your back supported and safe whilst you’re at work. An ergonomic chair is a perfect investment; you’ll be able to work safely in the knowledge that you've supported, and you won’t have to get up every 20 minutes to stretch!

The best location

Not everyone has a spare room that they can utilize as an office space. So, try to find a place in the house where you’re less likely to be distracted by the doorbell, the TV, kids playing, etc and keep out of the way! At the very least, find somewhere that has a door that you can close!

Something to unwind

Sitting at your desk and working without a break won’t do your productivity any favors, so make sure you have space where you can relax and reset your mind. You could invest in an armchair and enjoy catching up on a book for 10 minutes, or purchase some light exercise equipment, such as a yoga mat, hand weights or even a medicine ball so you can move your body and head back to your desk feeling refreshed and ready to work.

Introduce a little greenery

They say that spending as little as 20 minutes a day surrounded by nature is good for your mental health and your physical health too. So, why not introduce a little greenery into your office space? Adding a few houseplants will help to keep you relaxed, they add a little interest and color to the room. House plants work hard to purify the air too, so they’re good for you! If you’re lacking a little space then try adding a couple of succulents to your shelves or your desk for a little pop of color.

Say no to clutter

When working from home, clutter is your enemy! So make sure you’re keeping your workspace clear of anything that doesn’t belong.
