WORK PERMIT: OBAMA POLICY OF GIVING WORK NOT JAIL IS IMPRESSIVE

by Sofie Akinshina Content Writer

The immigrant work permit reform of President Obama has opened up opportunities for at least 1.2 million young undocumented immigrants to get temporary work and stay on deportation. The policy by President Obama and announced back in June last year covers younger illegal immigrants having no criminal history.

President Obama said this new policy was simply the "the right thing to do" notwithstanding the charge that the president overstepped his authority with the new policy after his DREAM Act was botched by the Congress.

USCIS spokesman has that said applications are so high for a work permit that will take "several months to process."

The immigrants work Permit must be seen as a humane policy. That is why it has evoked so much a positive response from the incumbents despite criticism from Republicans and other lobbies.

Context

As a result, illegal immigrants under the age of 31 can approach the Department of Homeland Security with applications for Work Permits under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals to prevent deportation. The program is a shot in the arm for an estimated 1 million undocumented young people who could have been better served by the aborted Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.

Formalities of Application

The documents that illegal immigrants have to present for DACA are,

  •           Fee of $465
  •           A Passport
  •          Birth Certificate
  •          School transcripts
  •          Medical Records
  •          Financial records
  •          Military records

The opposition Republicans sees it as an attempt at bypassing the Congress to improve his image prior to the election. Yet another section slammed it as ‘onslaught on unemployed American citizens”.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for a special work permit, the undocumented immigrants have to prove that they…

  •        Their current age is under 30
  •        They came to the U.S. before the age of 16
  •        They have lived in the U.S. for a minimum five  years
  •        They are not convicted for crimes or pose a security threat

Benefits

The program will allow qualified undocumented immigrants can stay back in the country and work lawfully in America at least for 2 years. This process will be benefiting millions of undocumented immigrants. But this will not guarantee them citizenship.

The initiatives like DAAC pronounced a fundamental shift in the approach to the Hispanic constituency of illegal immigrants with indications that U.S. immigration policy will trigger more political debate. Now the policymakers have to make decisions to add global competitiveness and keep the workforce young by attracting top foreign talent and curbing illegal immigration.

The policy change was also imperative to streamline a heavily bureaucratic visa process and address millions of undocumented immigrants particularly the youngsters.

The restrictive state-level immigration laws like Arizona's controversial SB 1070 was a warning that the Federal government cannot prolong reforms in immigration policy.  Through measures like immigrant work permit and the bipartisan Immigration Reform Bill, more aspects that affect national interests have been addressed albeit accommodating the President’s own political doctrines.
