Women Potential Can Be the Economic Growth Driver
by Joseph Martin SEOSri Lanka has
distinction of having the world’s first female prime minister. Sirimavo
Bandaranaike served three terms in the parliament as prime minister. Her first
term for 5 years started on 21st July 1960. That great
achievement assumed a greater significance for the fact that never before any
woman had reached such a high office. India can boast to be second in this race
when Smt. Indira Gandhi made it to the highest executive post of the country in
the year 1966.
Without gloating about
this issue of woman premiership, it would be pertinent to say that the western
world which projected itself as pioneers of women’s rights had to wait longer
to find a woman head for one of their countries. Savka Dab?evi? Ku?ar became
the first woman prime minister of Socialist Republic of Croatia in 1967.
Israel, a Middle East country, considered protégé of the US, got in the year
1969 its prime minister in Golda Meir who was popularly known as Israel’s ‘Iron
lady’, an epithet used for Margaret Thatcher who became British prime minister
in the year 1979.
With this preview of
woman prime ministers, the idea is to establish that Asia Pacific countries
have traditionally favoured woman in politics and the seat of power. It is,
however, a stark reality that though India got its first woman prime minister
within two decades of independence, but the discrimination against woman in
terms of wages, education, and social status still remains a question despite
many reforms introduced over the years and improvements that resultantly took
place.
By and
large women are getting good education and bright career opportunities in
India. This is even more visible for the other countries of the Asia Pacific
region. Woman now go for all sorts of vocations including those which were once
considered as prerogative of men. To register for Indopac Summit

Women are increasingly
occupying leading positions in the corporate world. Several Banks as prominent
as ICICI Bank and HSBC Bank have woman CEOs for many years. Many big corporate
ventures are being run by women bosses. For example, Apollo Hospitals, Biocon,
Kinetic Motors, and Times Group, all have a woman on the top. These are
encouraging signs. Women are realizing their goals. They have largely proved
that they are more successful when given a level field. But there is more scope
for their growth. It doesn’t require anybody’s sympathy. It requires a fair mindset
and a policy vision at the government level.
Women constitute half
of the human power, and it can be a growth accelerator if nurtured sagaciously
by introducing right plans and policies. By reaching top spots in every field,
women have succeeded to break the archaic mould build around them. Now, the
need is to utilize their potential in making the growth story of the region.
Indopac summit which
focuses on many issues which are important to economic growth of India and the
other Asia Pacific countries, would prove a major platform for delving into
these subjects. The summit will be attended by the eminent personalities from
world over in the fields of economics, business and politics. The Indopac
Summit would take place on 26 November in New Delhi. To read more articles
