Windows XP Replacement

by Warren Contreras Old Retired Guy
No doubt by now everyone has had the scare thrown at them from the impending demise of 'windows XP, but it's nothing to get your shorts in a bunch over. The truth is, the only real danger comes from the Internet and if you restrict your access, my guess is we can get by for many more years (if we choose to).

I have been snooping around the Linux Community the last few days and ran across what looks like a real candidate, at least for me. I have been running Linux for several years (PCLOS Lately) and when I found #! Linux (CrunchBang Linux) I was blown away. It was the easiest installation and configuration I have ever seen.

I did switch from the browser that comes with it, to Chromium and added a more Windows like desktop (XFCE4) and have been having a blast. It's like a kid with a new toy. In fact, I am writing this article from the old Compac computer I installed it on to test. Only 2 Gb ram and 100 Gb hard drive with a Celeron processor and it runs fast!

So don't throw away that old PC yet, download a free copy and give it a run. There is a great forum if you get into trouble or you can ask me.

Have Fun!

Unfortunately there are many applications that only run on Windows.
