Why You Need To Change Your Oil-Muffler Express

by Kevish Hook Web Designer
Oil changes are one of the most basic ongoing aspects of car repair and maintenance, but you might be wondering why it is necessary. Oil changes are one of those small details that can make a world of difference. Below are a few things you need to know about oil and your car’s engine.

Why You Need To Change Your Oil

Oil plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of your engine. It lubricates moving parts, minimizes friction, and helps to keep your engine cool. Think of oil as the lifeblood of your car, as it is vital to helping your engine provide the energy you require to drive. While oil does not evaporate, over time it will wear away or become too dirty that it is not able to adequately lubricate your engine.

Inevitable Dirt And Grit

As you drive, small particles of dirt and grit will inevitably find their way into your engine, and in turn your oil. The more miles you drive, the more dirt and grime will find their way in. Your local terrain and overall driving habits will also contribute to how quickly your oil gets dirty. Changing your old oil will flush out the dirt and grime, so that your new oil can start fresh. Even with a CARB approved catalytic converter, your dirty oil can increase your vehicle emissions.

How Often Should You Change Your Motor Oil?

Motor oil changes used to be suggested every 3 months, or 3,000 miles—but that is no longer standard. Check your cars owner’s manual to determine the frequency of oil changes. For new cars, this is typically between 5,000 and 7,000 miles. Your mechanic may suggest more frequent oil changes dependent on your driving habits, terrain, and seasonal weather. For cars that you drive infrequently, change the oil every 6 months.

Can You Change Your Oil Yourself?

Yes, you can change your oil yourself, but there are many benefits to having your mechanic do it for you. During your oil change, your mechanic will also perform a general inspection of your car. This includes checking your air filter, tires, spark plugs, and lights. For the minimal cost of an oil change, it is worth having your entire vehicle looked over.

Should You Upgrade To Premium Oil?

When it comes to selecting the right motor oil, you have a variety of options, some drastically more expensive than others. The truth is, standard oil is sufficient for most drivers, especially if you stay up-to-date with your scheduled oil changes. Upgrading your oil is best if you put a lot of miles on your car or live in extreme temperatures; either hot or cold. Find a trusted mechanic who won’t just try to up-sell you, but will give you an honest opinion.
Changing your oil will help to keep your engine healthy, and your exhaust system clean.
