Why You Need More Internet this Year and Why You Dont

Technology is perhaps the best thing to have happened in human history. Without technology we’d be lost, stuck somewhere in the Stone Age living primitive lives and struggling to outwit other animals in the jungle. The internet has played a key role in connecting everyone across the globe, smashing all barriers and the challenge of distance.

As we enter into the new year, it is important that we review the past year and learn from the mistakes that we made in order to become wiser and better informed to make important decisions in the future.

While the internet has come under a lot of criticism in recent times as people regularly call for stricter regulations to control its use especially among children , here are some reasons why you still need the internet this year.

1. You need it for quick and easy communication

One of the major advantages of the internet is that it allows you to remain in touch with your friends and family over long distances. It doesn’t matter where they are around the world, with just a simple click on your device – phone, tablet or computer – you can reach them and enjoy valuable conversations.

Beyond voice and text, you can also have a video call through numerous platforms. Skype remains popular for free video calls, whether to family or for corporate purposes. Also, you have social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp which enable you to see those with whom you’re chatting in real time.

Interviews are now moving digital to help companies cut down on costs and to reduce stress for applicants who can easily do a live interview over Skype or a recorded interview on HireVue.

2. Readily available information

Gone are the days when you have to leave your home to visit a library before you can get information on a particular subject. Nowadays, everything can be done electronically. We live in a digital world where you can get as much information as you need online from comfort of your home, or inside your car.

A simple online search will bring numerous hits from which you can choose and sift to find the article or piece of news that suits your specific needs. We have gone from scarcity of information to overabundance of information – information overload.

The type of information available on the internet is not limited. In fact, new information becomes outdated almost as soon as it hits the internet because something newer quickly follows. There is new information everywhere – in tweets, Facebook posts, Google+ rooms and emails. Wikipedia provides information on almost every topic.

3. Online education

Unlike in the past when you have to travel and attend school physically, now you can study online, write exams and get a degree without stepping a foot into the school premises.

While this is still a developing trend, many elite institutions such as Harvard University offer distance learning programs , realizing that many prospective students cannot afford to attend school due to one or more circumstances. People from developing countries may not be able to afford visa costs or meet up with the cost of living in a developed country throughout the period of their education; nursing mothers who want to continue learning may find it difficult to move to the school neighbourhood; employees may not be willing to leave their jobs to focus full-time on studying.

But these are no more barriers to education as many institutions offer online courses in various courses ranging from journalism to public speaking and environmental policies. With an internet connection, you can easily log into your profile and download necessary materials, submit your assignments and write your exams, and your certificate will be mailed to you upon completion.

In addition, there are numerous websites including Coursera online that offer online training courses to help you learn any skill you want. Video platforms such as YouTube allows you to post videos online to teach people or learn new tricks and skills.

4. Digital marketing

Smart businesses are quickly transforming from print to digital to stay ahead of competition and reach a wider audience. The internet is recognized as the most powerful tool in marketing and it is the future of marketing. Small businesses have recorded tremendous growth by increasing their online marketing efforts with quality digital content.

On platforms like Amazon, you can sell or buy almost anything from books and clothes to software and electronics. The world is moving digital at a very fast speed and all this is possible because of the internet.

On the flip side of these benefits are the downsides. The major complaint against the internet is that it can become addictive and lead to waste of useful work hours. This is more serious with the emergence and wild growth of social media which has captured the hearts and minds of both the young and old, who spend a lot of time and money to stay connected to the virtual world.

Technology has the tendency of reducing workers’ productivity at workplace. It also lowers the level of involvement and interaction among individuals thereby driving them further apart and isolating people from their immediate surroundings.

The question of whether we need the internet or not is almost irrelevant because the internet cannot be stopped. While the advantages are great, there are many reasons why you should consider cutting down on the amount of hours you stay online this year.
