Why Shouldn’tyou Become An Airline Pilot?

Being an airline pilot can be one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. After all, there are few experiences quite like being at the helm of a plane sailing above an open ocean, while seemingly infinite stars litter the night sky.

However, with one Los Angeles Times report indicating that as many as 13% of American commercial airline pilots could be suffering from depression, it is also our duty as a responsible Aviation Recruiter to address both the positive and negative aspects of life as an airline pilot.

It isn’t always highly paid

The job of an airline pilot is one of the most responsible on Earth. After all, the average commercial pilot may be flying hundreds of people every day.

It is therefore entirely fair that pilots can earn as much as £140,000 a year, according to the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA). However, a pilot career is by no means a get-rich-quick scheme. You are likely to need to spend about £80,000 simply to attend flying school, and the typical starting salary is only around £36,000.

Pilots don’t even do that much manual flying

With Monarch pilot Sam Bray having told The Telegraph that “on a regular flight the autopilot does around 90 per cent of the flying”, there can be no doubt of how technology has dramatically transformed the pilot’s job in recent decades.

Nonetheless, the debate continues to rage about whether automated controls could one day make the pilot’s role completely redundant.

You’ll be in great demand

According to Boeing, an additional 637,000 qualified pilots will be required globally by 2036.

People aren’t falling out of love with international travel – indeed, more and more of them around the world are falling in love with it.

The Asia-Pacific region, for example, is set to see 40 per cent greater demand over the coming two decades. As apilot, you can therefore expect to be kept very busy.

Simply being a pilot is... magical

Whatever stage you are at in your pilot career, there’s something very thrilling about the very act of flying a plane.

Even once that initial adrenaline rush wears off, there are always new places to go, new sights to see and new experiences to experience.
