Why Should You Attend A Film School?

by Aisfm Edu International Filmmaking Schools
In the era of the internet why does one need to attend a film school? While thousands of videos are made available to a vast number of people where time is not a constraint and money is not an issue what advantage will a student who goes to film school have? Given the fact that film schools are expensive these questions are very common among students. But going to a film school does have its own advantages and edge. One such school in India is the Annapurna International School in Film +Media (AISFM), this school offers a Master’s Degree program in Film production and a Post Graduate Course in Film Production.

Film schools are not like any other schools for a medicine, law, or CA. The film industry is not a mainstream dream every second person has. This makes going to a film school different than going to any other university. Unlike other universities where a student can choose the subject according to his profession like commerce, economics, arts, film school cater to variations within a single industry.

That being said, filmmaking is also all about the freedom, expression, creativity, breaking stereotypes, so on and so forth. These qualities develop overtime, while you are studying filmmaking it is all about other basic things such as practice, time, opportunities, etc. Hence, let us look at a few reasons why you should join a film school:

1. Practice: as said previously, practice makes a man perfect. The art of filmmaking lies in its eye for detail. The right sequences of shots, the perfect locations, the right cast for the roles, all of this requires hours of detailing and practice. One shot can be taken with multiple angles, to work the camera in ways suitable for the desired shot needs precision and practice.

Film schools give you the necessary leeway to practice your skill time and time again.

2. Room to make mistakes: learning on your own and correcting your mistakes takes a long time because you are your own student and teach. But when you join a film school you have room to make as many mistakes and be corrected for them same at the same time. The constant guidance of teachers and fellow peers expedites the process of learning.

3. Structured Environment: though learning on your own is never a bad thing one of tends to get lost. You do not know where to begin or what the sequence of learning is. This is where joining a film school has its advantage, when you enroll into a film school there is a structure to be followed. You have a syllabus to finish, teachers to teach and hours to gain experience from the best. In an organized environment learning becomes faster.

4. Opportunities: self-learning is all about finding your own way and creating your own niche in the industry. Though everybody loves a self-made person there is no harm in seeking the help of an institution in the process. By joining a school for film studies you have automatically opened doors through the tie-ups your school has with various agencies. For internships or post-graduation you always have an option to start somewhere immediately.

5. Build a network: another advantage of joining a film school is that you have the opportunity to build your own network. Through your peers that come from certain families, or through your internships, job opportunities, events, etc. This is a faster way to build your own network than having to do it on your own from scratch.

6. Guidance: probably the most important advantage of joining a film school. Guidance from a teacher who has already experienced similar situations helps you in not repeating them. They help you refine your visions after watching several students either make it or break it in the industry.

The journey of filmmaking involves several rounds of feedbacks, criticisms, advices, all of which you will be guided through by your professors.

Therefore, attending a film school is always a better choice for your career and your dream. In a structured, streamlined, safe, and professional environment you also tend to pick other qualities like communication, team work, working with deadlines, and several others. These little subtle qualities though not taught are picked up from a surrounding environment making the transition from film school to professional life easier.
