Why Not Try Something New This Raksha Bandhan?

by sunil gavaskar clan member

Raksha Bandhan is popularly known as the Festival of Sacred Thread (Rakhi). It happens generally in the month of Shravan (August). Raksha means protection and Bandhan means tie or bond. On this day sisters tie Rakhis (sacred threads) on the wrists of their brothers during the sacred thread ceremony early in the mornings and receive gifts from their brother.  The most exciting part of the entire festival is gifts given to the sisters. They just eagerly await the end of the ceremony to grab the gifts. Love and affections are exchanged in the form of teasing. Brothers tell their sisters that the gifts would depend on how beautiful the Rakhi would be. Generally, brothers offer greeting or wish-giving cards, clothes, money or something thoughtful.

Buying a Rakhi For Her Brother:

A few days before the day of Raksha Bandhan, you get to see the sellers of Rakhis in the streets or shopkeepers selling the same. For a woman, it is difficult to select the best Rakhis for her brother as Rakhis come in a number of designs, patterns, colors and themes. Markets get abuzz with activities as shops selling multi-hued ‘rakhis’ of different shape and designs.

If you have seen a lot of Rakhis and yet not satisfied with the cliché ones, try something new. Add some spiritual substance to the ceremony! A Rakhi made of Rudraksha beads would be a gem, wouldn’t it be?

Rakhis made of Rudraksh beads:

India’s any festival is incomplete without exchanging the gifts, the same goes for Raksha Bandhan. While there are different types of Rakhis most of which are traditional, Rakhis made of pure Rudraksha beads would be extremely unique. These beads are no man-made but the products of nature found in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and Java of Indonesia. In the ancient Puranas, Rudraksha symbolizes Lord Shiva. “Rudra” stands for Lord Shiva and “Aksha” for Shiva’s tears. Lord Shiva himself is the first ardent user and admirer of Rudraksha. The bead is belived to protect the wearer from fear and trouble. Even scientists came up with their research findings that Rudraksha beads do impact the body.

Rudraksha beads come in different Mukhis (faces) from one to twenty one. Each has different properties. For example a Twelve Mukhi Rudraksha bead ruled by Sun. The one who wear sit receives the quality of the sun; brilliance, radiance and leadership. Likewise there other Rudraksha beads with different properties.  Also you can gift Rakhi bracelets in gold or silver, Shree Yantra Rakhi and the like. Wouldn’t it be great if you buy your brother a Rakhi of Rudraksha bead?
