Why Natural Gas and Excess Flow Valves Go Hand in Hand

by Tiffany Renee Natural Gas Specialist
People have become more and more dependent on public utilities in order to keep their homes warm in the winter time and cool in the summer time. The fact of the matter is, there are many different types of utilities that can provide those benefits to you. One that is commonly used in the United States and elsewhere in the world is natural gas. It is clean, efficient and is just as safe as any other type of utility that can provide you with the benefits that you desire. Like anything else, it's important for you to understand the safety rules behind using natural gas and what you can do in order to make it safer for everyone involved.

First of all, it's a good idea for you to become as informed as possible about natural gas and how it operates. You should become familiar with how it smells and know the telltale signs of when there is a problem. If you should happen to smell natural gas, either in your home or in any other area, it's important for you to contact emergency services as soon as possible. The smell can be an indicator that there is a problem that needs to be fixed immediately. Do not stay in the area, contact somebody who is able to take care of the problem professionally.

Something else that you can do regularly to determine if there is a problem with the gas in your home is to see if you have a blue flame. A blue flame is an indicator that the gas in the home is operating correctly and that the appliances are operating correctly as well. If there is a yellow or any other color flame, contact somebody to come repair it as soon as possible. Not only can it be a risk for gas being in the home, it may also mean that you are having a buildup of carbon monoxide which could be deadly.

Familiarize yourself with the natural gas equipment at your home. Make sure that the excess flow valves are in place and are operating properly, as they can help to avert any problems that may happen to occur. You should also ensure that you have a combustible gas detector in place because, like a smoke detector, it can alert you to any problems that may exist. These are proactive options that are available and they should be utilized when possible to help keep everyone in your home safe.

Finally, it is a good idea for you to have other types of safety equipment in the home which would help in case there are any problems. These would include having smoke detectors which are regularly tested to determine if they are operating properly. You should also have a fire extinguisher in the home or in your place of business, regardless of whether you are using natural gas or any other type of public utilities. Those items can help to save your life and can also help to save your property, if problems should happen to occur.
