Why Group Counseling is considered the most effective treatment to Substance Abuse Treatment

by Dmaon T. Health Counselor

Group counseling is a form of therapy where people from similar situations get together and share their experiences to help one another. It's especially helpful for those that have found it difficult to move on. It lets you learn skills to help with anxiety. It's also affordable compared to other alternatives. Groups provide positive peer support and pressure to abstain from substances of abuse.

Group therapy and addiction treatment are natural allies. One reason is that people who abuse substances often are more likely to remain abstinent and committed to recovery when treatment is provided in groups, apparently because of rewarding and therapeutic forces such as affiliation, confrontation, support, gratification, and identification. It's a more supportive environment and it would be easier for people who are shy or don't like one-on-one counseling to open up in front of others because they feel less threatened by a group setting.

Group therapy is a great therapeutic option for people who would feel uncomfortable going to individual sessions. The consultations are usually led by a counselor and at a comfortable pace where each participant can truly open up and share their thoughts, feelings and experiences with other peers and get feedback from each other.

Some of the numerous advantages to using groups in substance abuse treatment are described below:

  • Groups provide positive support and also pressure at the same time to abstain from substances of abuse.
  • Groups reduce the sense of isolation that most people experience.
  • Groups give people the opportunity who abuse substances to witness the recovery of others in the same phase
  • Groups allow members to see how others deal with similar problems
  • Groups can also provide useful information to clients who are new to recovery journey.
  • Groups provide valuable feedback concerning the values and abilities of other group members
  • Groups instill hope, a sense that “If he can make it, so can I.”
  • Groups often support and provide encouragement to one another outside the group setting
