Open Heart Surgery Overviews

An open heart surgery is a type of surgery where the chest is cut open and the surgery is done on the muscle, arteries or valves of the heart. As per the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, the coronary artery bypass grafting is the most common type of heart surgery performed on adults. During this surgery, a healthy artery or vein is grafted to a blocked coronary artery. This will allow the grafted artery to bypass the blocked artery and bring the fresh blood to the heart.

Sometimes, called as a traditional heart surgery since today there are many new heart procedures that can be done with only the small incisions and not wide openings.

Open Heart Surgery Procedure

As per the National Institutes of Health, a CABG will take about four to six hours and usually done following these basic steps:

The patient will be given general anesthesia to ensure that you will asleep and pain free through the whole surgery. The surgeon will make an eight to ten inch cut in the chest. The surgeon will cut through all or part of the patient’s breastbone thereby exposes the heart. Once the heart is visible, you will be connected to a heart lung bypass machine which will move the blood away from the heart so that the surgeon can operate.

The surgeon will use a healthy vein or artery to make a new path around the blocked artery and will close the breastbone with the wire by leaving it inside the body. The original cut will then be stitched up.
