Why Drugged Driving is Just as Bad as Drunk Driving

by Miramar Recovery Centers Addiction Recovery Specialist

Driving under the influence is one of the leading causes of car accidents ending in injuries or death, but drinking and driving isn’t the only problem. In fact, drugged driving is causing just as many car accidents as alcohol. MADD reported that in 2013, drunk driving caused 10,076 deaths and 290,000 injuries. Alongside drunk driving, 9.9 million people reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs. Drug rehab centers from Los Angeles to the East Coast are working to reduce this number.

Measuring Drugged Driving

Driving under the influence of illegal drugs or improperly-used prescription drugs is dangerous, but unlike alcohol, drug consumption can be more difficult to measure. This has made it a challenge to record how many accidents are actually linked to driving under the influence of drugs.

Marijuana is the number one drug linked to these accidents, but is often overlooked. Whether you live in Los Angeles or Miami, marijuana and alcohol are the leading cause of car accidents ending in injuries and deaths. Referring someone to drug rehab centers could be the first step to making the roads a safer place.

The Demographic

Studies show that a large number of those involved in accidents caused by drugged driving were under 25 years of age. Often mistaken as the “better choice,” young adults choose to drive under the influence of drugs instead of alcohol, but the dangers that come with getting behind the wheel while “buzzed” are just as high.

Prevention

Prevention is key in keeping these accidents from becoming a nationwide epidemic. Always designate a sober driver and make sure that a sober driver is in charge of everyone’s keys. It’s also important to utilize other options, such as taxis or Uber.

If someone you know continues to abuse drugs and is at risk of getting behind the wheel when under the influence, drug rehab centers are always an option. Whether you live in a big city like Los Angeles or a small farm town, drugged driving is dangerous and can be prevented.
