Why Does My Tumble Dryer Squeak? The UK’s Drying Dilemmas Revealed

by James P. Outreach & PR Executive

While being one of the most important steps on our laundry process, drying will often be one of the steps we pay less attention to than any other. You might wash your delicate clothes separately and iron every garment at the correct temperature, but careful cleaning practices can all go to waste if you dry them without any regard in your tumble dryer.

In fact, Google search data reveals Britain’s biggest drying problems when it comes to this mighty household appliance. Mielea manufacturer of domestic washing machines and tumble dryers, collected the data to reveal the UK’s biggest drying dilemmas. Between smells, squeaks, stops, and electric problems, over 650 keyword terms were reviewed for their search frequency between September 2019 and August 2020, each term being a different problem that people may face when it comes to their tumble dryer.

Luckily, it appears that most problems are a simple fix, with smell dominating 51 per cent of searches relating to drying problems. Electrical problems came bottom, contributing to only seven per cent of all searches. Here, we look at the biggest problems that Brits face with the tumble dryers, all of their easy fixes, and how to avoid the problem next time around.

Who ‘nose’ this problem?

We’ve all encountered a musty towel at one point or a jumper that doesn’t sit right on the nose when we take it out the dryer. You may be tempted to throw your laundry straight back in the wash to fix this noticeable odour, but you must fix the problem before you repeat your mistakes.

The data showed that between 2019 and 2020, searches for ‘laundry smells bad after drying’ and ‘clothes smell after drying’ were each searched for 140 per month on average. Year on year, these terms have increased by 56 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.

There are various reasons for bad-smelling clothes after laundry, and they often have very simple solutions. Although tumble dryers themselves aren’t usually dirty inside, lingering smells from the laundry are a likely cause of smells from a tumble dryer. Keeping your tumble dryer’s filters clean is another good way to protect against smells, and is good practice anyway. Some advanced tumble dryers can even prompt you when it’s time to clean your filters.

Newer and innovative dryers, such as heat pump tumble dryers, can dry your clothes at a lower temperature. Not only does this increase your clothes longevity by reducing the thermal strain on your fabrics, it will also reduce your energy consumption.

Other mechanical issues

While your dryer may perform its intended function, sometimes the appliance can get a little loud. In fact, 480 people turn to Google each month to ask why their ‘dryer is squeaking when tumbling’, making it the most popular search term in the data collected.

Squeaky driers are normally a result of wear and tear, but it’s not the end of the world. Drum mount bearings and belt idler pulleys can wear down, but luckily, they are easily replaceable.
