Which type of water purifier is best to use in India?

by Water Purifier Anjan Sengupta (Service Head)

India is blessed with various water sources from rivers to lakes and water springs to groundwater. People in different parts of the country have access to different sources of water depending on the regions they live in. However, with rapid urbanization and other infrastructural changes, water sources are under constant threat. Industrialization is not only depleting the quality of the rivers and lakes but it is also affecting the groundwater. Whether you have access to tap water or borewell water, you need to install a water purifier at home.

Water purifiers not only filter the water but also remove bad tastes and odors. Consuming purified water will prevent waterborne diseases as well as maintain good health. However, most people tend to get confused when choosing a water purifier because there are so many options available in the market today.

Often, we tend to buy purifiers depending on the budget or water filter price. That’s not the only factor that you need to consider when choosing a purifier. You have to look at different aspects like technology, storage capacity, and the features required for your use.

But, before you move on to other aspects, you must pay attention to water quality. Yes, it is the primary factor that determines a few other factors when choosing a purifier. Of course, you can’t determine the quality of water without getting a test done. Your eyes can’t see even if the water is contaminated unless it is muddy. When you get a water quality test, you will find out -

  • Whether the TDS levels are low or high

  • Whether it contains any other contaminants

  • Whether the water has microbes

If the TDS is low i.e., between 150 to 300 ppm then the water is potable. You can opt for a gravity-based water purifier to filter the particulate matter and then it is good to use. If the TDS levels are high i.e., it contains 300 to 500 or more than 500 ppm then it is not fit for drinking. You will need a purifier that can reduce the TDS in water.

Best water purifier to use in India

As mentioned earlier, different regions in India have different water sources. Depending on the season, distance, and abundance of sources, the water is supplied to the households. Rivers, freshwater lakes, reservoirs, borewells, and wells are the common sources of water in India. Although the water from freshwater sources has TDS within permissible limits, there is a need to purify it because of the contamination. Usually, the groundwater and bore water contain more percentage of TDS which makes it necessary to use RO purification systems.

Irrespective of the source of water, it is advisable to use RO purifiers at home. Even though the tap water is purified at the local municipal level, the pipes or storage tanks through which it reaches households may become the source of contamination. Hence, it is advisable to use a purification technology that can remove TDS, treat hard water and also eliminate bad odors or tastes from the water. And, RO is the best water purifier in India.

RO or Reverse Osmosis is a purification method that works with the help of a porous membrane. TDS which contains heavy metals, minerals, inorganic and organic substances, particulate matter, harmful chemicals, and microorganisms get easily eliminated with RO technology. The membrane is placed in such a way that when the impurities mixed with water moves  through the filter, it catches all the impurities and allows only the water to go  through. Since this method is effective in removing most types of impurities, RO is one of the popular purification methods used in India and across the world.
