When Preparation Is The Key

by Underlay 4u Carpets

The newly fitted carpet can transform any room but just like wall and ceiling decorating it is the preparation that makes all the difference.

A good decorator will spend four days removing all the old paint and paper and on a large room perhaps another similar amount of time preparing the surfaces and applying primer and underlay.

The final coat may only take a couple of days so the vast majority of the time spent on a good finish is always in that preparation.

The same can be said when fitting a new carpet. The preparation is paramount to a good finish. When completely redecorating and carpeting any room in the house the old carpet along with any old underlay should be thrown out and preferably burnt.

If the carpet is very old it will be infested with tiny mites that may be too small for the naked eye but is nevertheless something best destroyed by fire.

The bare floor then needs attention and this is where the differences between concrete, floor boards and composite floor blocks will have bearing on the underlay choice.

The opportunity of seeing the state of the floor must be taken advantage of. With floor boards this is an ideal moment to inspect the gap between the floor and the joists to make sure there is no woodworm or other pest problems.

Lift a few floor boards and if this is an upstairs room this will enable you to check any electrical wiring. Your local authority or utility company can advise on current legislation about the legal age of electrical wiring.

This is particularly important if the house is rented and you are either the owner or the tenant as there are very strict controls on electrical safety these days.

When putting the floorboards back it will be worth testing underfoot the whole area for any squeaking floor boards. This can be very irritating to discover after the carpet is fitted.

If the gaps between some boards are a little larger than normal it may be that an extra lining should be laid down before the underlay.

When it comes to the actual underlay this is something that you can order yourself and fit with ease. If you are not a qualified carpet fitter then you will be better off getting a professional fitter to do the last part of the operation and fit the actual carpet.

The rules of thumb is that as all underlay is very cheap in price compared with carpets then always consider buying the best.

A good acoustic and tog rated foam underlay like tredaire dreamwalk is a popular choice when it comes to the highest quality to compliment and make the most of the new carpet.

All good carpet manufacturers will always stress the importance of a sound level floor and a top rated underlay to guarantee you the longest possible life of the new carpet.
