WhatsApp to launch multi-device support : All you need to know

by Alicia Brown Application Developer

WhatsApp is one of the leading messaging platforms worldwide and lately it has been at the center of controversy. The infamous messaging platform has been under scrutiny ever since the updated privacy policy. Users all over the world see it as a violation of their privacy and have fled to other messaging platforms such as Telegram and Signal.

Ever since the backlash it seems that WhatsApp is trying to repair its relationship with its users by rolling out one update after the other. This includes using its status feature to inform users about updates and features, introducing biometric logging in options on WhatsApp Web and the latest is the multi-device feature.

What does multi-device support mean?

WhatsApp is soon expected to release multi-device support. The feature has been observed on the beta versions of iOS and Android.

Multi-device support will completely change the way we use WhatsApp. This feature will allow users to operate a single WhatsApp account from up to four different devices simultaneously. As of now, users can only use WhatsApp from one device at a time. However, after the update users will be able to “log-in” to multiple devices. They can log-in or out of any device via the settings. Another change that can be observed is that the “Delete My Account” option has been replaced with “Log-In”. It is unclear if the change is here to stay or is something that WhatsApp is testing out with the update, we will have to wait for the final build to be sure.

In other news

Additionally, WhatsApp Web users will soon be able to use the messaging platform even if the main device does not have an internet connection. Presently, if you want to use the messaging platform on your desktop or laptop than your main device which is your phone needs to be connected to the internet or Wi-Fi.

WaBetaInfo reported that “this limit might change in future and this type doesn’t require an active Internet connection on the main phone as well.”

It has also been revealed that WhatsApp has been developing a new feature known as “mention badge” for group chats. This new feature includes muting videos before sharing them.

In Conclusion

As of now no official launch date has been released. The constant stream of updates seems to be WhatsApp’s way to make amends due to its third party data sharing policies. The multi-device support will be a great aid to users and definitely be an appealing feature. The plethora of new features and updates might be enough of an enticement to stay with the messaging platform.
