What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you?

by Shashi Ranjan I am entrepreneur

My watch showed 6:30 pm when I got free to go home from my college. I was a day scholar and had to stay late that day due to placement season.

During winters, it gets dark by this time in Northern India.

I didn’t have any means to travel back to my home except the city bus.

There I was, standing at the roadside on the outskirts of my city, waiting for the bus since past half an hour.

It was 7 pm now. A group of laborers were also waiting for the bus, a few steps away from me on my left. They were probably working at the new building being constructed two blocks away from my college.

I could sense their eyes on me as we waited for the bus to show up.

My phone had died. Else I could have called someone from home to come pick me up.

I don’t know if I was just being paranoid or that group of men were actually standing closer to me than before.

No other female. What if I am the only girl in the bus? I was getting stressed. It was getting darker.

I saw two students walking down the slope from across the road still in their uniform.

They stopped and one of them stood at the opposite side of the road to cross it. The other boy followed.

They reached my side of the road and stood near the sign board which was about two feet on my right. I could hear distant mumbling from my either side now. Then one of the guys came near me. I looked at him. He looked at his friend.

His friend joined and that’s when he asked, “Excuse me, are you waiting for someone?”

I looked at him but didn’t reply. He looked at his friend again.

The other guy continued, “or are you waiting for the city bus?”

I said, “Yes”. They took a step back and mumbled something.

The first guy said, “You can go and wait inside that lodge at the entrance of our college. We will call you when the bus comes.”

Why?

That’s the look I gave them. The other guy, “We are going to the city too. Umm, do you have someone who you could call to pick you up maybe?”

I told them about my phone.

You can use my phone.”

I didn’t want to. They asked me to go inside the lodge and charge my phone as the gatekeeper usually has spare chargers.

I agreed to that. I went inside and sat down. I plugged my phone to the charger I borrowed from one of the guards.

10 minutes later, I called home and asked my brother to pick me up. My mom was worried and had already sent him for me.

A few minutes after my call, I heard tyres screeching. The bus had arrived. One of the guys came running.

The bus is here. Come, I have asked the driver to wait.”

I told him that my brother is on his way so he could carry on.

He asked, “Are you sure?”

I affirmed. He asked his friend to come down from the bus, who was reserving the first seat near the bus gate. I saw all the laborers inside. The bus was full of them, some of them boarded from the previous stop. The guy gestured for the driver to leave.

He explained his friend about my brother coming to receive me. They started walking back towards the college.

I called the guy and asked him why they weren’t on the bus.

He said with a smile, “We are hostelers” and left.

I stood there in disbelief and watched them walk towards the boys’ hostel as they slowly turned into silhouettes, and then disappeared.

I never said thank you. I just couldn’t fathom why they did what they did.

If even one of you guys are reading this, thank you for being ready to go out of your way for a girl you didn’t know. Thank you for being nice to a stranger.
