What's in an Earthquake Emergency Kit?

by Daisy Warfel Survival Master
Natural disasters have been causing chaos for humanity since the beginning of time. In most cases, a disaster may be preceded by some form of warning, but that is not the case when you are talking about an earthquake. An earthquake can occur in any location, at any magnitude, and it will do so with surprising suddenness. In fact, it is estimated that there are currently millions of earthquakes occurring around the world annually with thousands of them being felt, and hundreds of them being potentially life-threatening. That is why it is so important for you to make sure that you have an earthquake emergency kit available. What’s included in these kits?

In essence, an earthquake emergency kit gives you and your family the opportunity to survive for several days if you are completely cut off from the world around you. Those kits are available for use in the home as well as for use in the car, and it’s a good idea for you to have each of them available at any given time. Having one of the emergency kits at your disposal can often make the difference between life and death for you and your family, so make sure that you take this responsibility very seriously.

Earthquake Kits for Home Use - the type of kit that is used for earthquake survival in the home should be able to support you and your family for several days. It should provide you with all the food that is necessary to eat during that time and also give you clean drinking water. Having the proper nutrition during such a disaster becomes especially important if there is some type of injury that is involved. There are specific types of emergency foods that are available for this type of kit that will last for years in storage.

Your home kit should also contain items that are important for sanitation and first aid. It is likely that there are at least going to be some minor injuries that are associated with a major earthquake, and in an emergency situation, those minor injuries can turn septic. You should also have artificial lighting available as well as an emergency shelter, and a means of communicating with the outside world. Even if you have to stay in your location alone for several days, it's always a good idea for you to know what is going on in the area around you and to allow others to know that you are in the area.

Earthquake Kits for Cars - Like earthquake kits for use in the home, it's important for you to have one in your automobile. If you are in the wrong area, you could easily be stranded for days, completely cut off from the world around you. Make sure that you have communication, emergency food, water, shelter and first aid supplies included in that kit for use in the automobile. It should also be packed in a waterproof sealed container that is easy to carry, just in case you need to pack out on foot.
