What You Need to Know About Home Break-ins

by Whiteshark Media White Shark Media

No one wants to feel violated in their own home. This should be a place you feel safe and secure! Break-ins are the most worrisome property crime concern across America, including here in our area. To get a better understanding of burglary and the risks you face, we have put together a few very interesting home burglary facts and statistics. Beyond that, we’ve also included safety tips and essential steps you can take to keep your home, family, pets, and valuable belongings secure.

#1 Burglaries happen… a lot. "This won't happen to me" you think. Many people think that, and many people are wrong! In fact, a home break in occurs every 30 seconds. Statistically, you're more likely to have your home broken into if you live in a rural area. You’d expect that New York City and California might have more burglaries per capita, but they’re actually near the bottom of the list compared to places "in the middle of nowhere."

#2 Most burglaries happen during the day. You probably have an idea of someone breaking in a night and scaring you awake from your sleep. In fact, most break ins occur during the day when no one is at home. More burglars do their misdeeds in the bright light of day instead of under cover of darkness. A 2016 burglary victimization survey revealed that the most common time for burglaries was between noon and 4 p.m.The reason behind this is actually pretty simple. The criminal doesn't want you to be there!

#3 Burglaries are costly. The average loss from burglary is $2,661. In addition to the monetary cost, burglaries also take a big emotional toll. You may easily recover from a financial setback but what about mourning the loss of things with sentimental value and the feeling of safety you had before the break-in? Imagine your grandmother's engagement ring or the gift your husband gave you many years ago being taken by a criminal. That's devastating! A full 63% of people whose homes were robbed who had trouble sleeping afterwards.

Looking at this list, it is clear you need to do something to make sure a home burglary doesn't happen to you. Be proactive, not reactive. Do you need a gun? Do you need to set up an alarm system? In fact, one of the best things you can do to protect your home is to make sure you have thick, sturdy exterior doors. While you may picture someone breaking into your home by smashing a window, statistics tell us that this isn't often the case. That would be extremely noisy and certainly bring unwanted attention from the neighbors. Criminals, instead, simply break apart the door enough to let themselves in. It's easy for them and quiet too.

Make today the day you look into mahogany exterior doors. Unlike something cheaper and weaker, you can know for sure no one will be able to break into solid wood exterior doors like these.
