What will happen to boxing after Pacquiao’s loss?

by Kim Morrie Professional Sports Bettor

I can still remember the fight quite clearly. Sports betting websites at that time had Pacquiao on the upper hand of the match. It was the sixth round and Manny Pacquiao, considered one of the best and most exciting boxers of the decade, was aggressively attacking Manuel Marquez, another boxer who’s going to be legend in the history of boxing. Pacquaio landed some good shots on Marquez that obviously hurt the latter. A few seconds before the end of the round, Marquez was on the ropes and Pacquiao went in for another attack. We all know how that ended. Marquez threw a powerful left counter that knocked the lights out of living Philippine hero. Everyone was stunned as laid on the canvass for what seemed like an eternity for his fans. Both the Marquez and Pacquiao’s supporters didn’t see that one coming. No sports book betting had that coming. The most exciting boxer was down and out. The boxer who kept the boxing sport alive for a decade with his tremendous speed and power had lost. The boxer that has drawn so much attention to the sport might not be fighting, at least for a while.

It was not long after, that boxing enthusiasts from different sides of the sport’s spectrum had start wondering, what would happen to the sport now? Has the time come for the sport to fade?

It’s not like Manny Pacquiao was the only good boxer all this time. There are many great boxers in the different divisions of the sport right now. Perhaps Pacquaio’s loss can be something positive for the sport too, although it depends on the promoters of the sport.

Pacquiao’s popularity did something great for the sport, but it also had its downside. The type of excitement that most of Pacquiao’s had made other boxing matches without Pacquiao in it seemed boring. When Pacquiao started knocking out is opponents, most boxing audience kind of expected that all other fights are just as explosive. It’s like tasting and getting used to the finest wine, and then forced to drink an ordinary table wine.

Without Pacquiao out of the picture, other talented boxers can show off their skills. Audience will get to see and perhaps appreciate the sweet science of boxing. Although it won’t create rabid bandwagon of supporters that stops supporting the sport as soon as their hero is out, boxing can have a more loyal following with a fan base that can appreciate the sport itself.
