What Tools Do Professional Plastic Fabricators Use

by Reg Burn Plastic Fabricator
If you own a successful retail business in the midst of Sydney, chances are that you use custom fabricated acrylic displays in your store for merchandising purposes. Have you ever wondered as to what kind of equipment pieces are used to craft those stylish and attractive display cases and 3D banners? Well, to begin with, there are plenty of tools employed by tradespeople associated with the field. In this article, the most important ones from among them will be discussed in detail:

Scoring Tool

A scoring tool is used mainly for marking the line along which a Perspex or Plexiglass sheet would be broken. It places a deep scratch on the surface of the sheet, which is the weakened spot of the material. On bending the sheet along the abrasion, it can be easily divided into two halves.

Router

No, we are not talking about the kind of router you use in your shop for Internet connectivity. In the trade of plastic fabrication, router is an essential tool used for creating a hollow into the surface of a plastic sheet. An ideal router can accept ½ inch as well as ¼ inch shank bits and also has guide collars. It generally costs a few hundred dollars in the market.

Scrapers

These are usually stray pieces of tool steel that have sharp corners and are flat. Scrapers help in removing tool marks from a plastic material by scraping them away until the acrylic or thermoplastic becomes square & smooth. In other words, they help in smoothing surfaces in order to make them ideal for flame polishing.

Blow Torch

Normally an oxygen/hydrogen blow torch, this is one of the quintessential tools for effective plastic fabrication. It aids in flaming the edges of a plastic material in order to polish them for a bright and clear finish. Some pros also utilise propane flames, but these blow torches tend to make things difficult when working with coloured thermoplastics.

Solvent Cement

The adhesive that is used for cementing acrylic or other plastic, works by melting the joining surfaces, so that molecules from the parts actually combine in order to create watertight, clear and strong joints. The most common form of solvent cementing technique of acrylic is known as capillary cementing.
