What to Consider Before Renting a Car?

by Tom James Bargain Car, Truck & Van Rentals

Car rentals services have been going strong for several years now, despite the emergence of ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft.

Ride-sharing can be smart but most people find it expensive, especially for professional use. Most organizations provide pick-up and drop services to their employees, for which they prefer employee car rental services.

You get past the hassle of entering your location and waiting for a cab every time you want to move around the city.

Here’s when you know hiring a cab is more feasible. That said, you need to keep a few things in mind while opting for car rental company.

3 Things to Consider While Renting a Car

1. Use your credit card

If you’re traveling to another city or simply going on a road trip within your city. You’d probably rent a car. But remember to use your credit card while renting one.

You could use your debit card, however, the problem here is that a credit check will be carried out to see if you can pay off the charges.

You can skip all this trouble with a credit card. Here’s another thing to keep in mind, some car rental companies will put a hold on some funds from the card until you’re done with the car.

That’s not all, prepared credit cards are a big no while renting a car since rental companies do not accept them.

2. Age criteria and number of drivers

Most states have 25 and above, as the age criteria for renting out a car. So, if you or anyone driving with you is under 25 years of age, do not keep them in the driver’s list.

Sure, if you have a 24-year-old daughter who drives impeccably, remember that the car rental company does not really care. They only see underage people as possible liabilities to their goods.

Thus, expect a daily fee tracked onto your bill for having anyone under 25 on your list, regardless of whether or not they drive during the trip.

Furthermore, if you’re traveling with family or friends, don’t add several people to your driver’s list. Keep a lid on how many of you actually get to drive the car.

Try to stick with two drivers alone so that you don’t end up paying more money than you really should.

3. Shop around on the car insurance

You probably already know how important car insurance really is and the same is true when it comes to car rentals.

If anything happens to the rental car, you don’t need to freak out as you’ll be covered. Whatever costs you bare for any damage listed under insurance will be refunded to you.

So, you may wonder which is the right place to get insurance while renting a car. Many actually do get one from the rental company itself.

However, we do not fully recommend that as car rentals offer insurance at a high price. Well, you could certainly turn to the company for insurance if all your other means are exhausted.

If not, then simply check your personal vehicle insurance, as it may already cover rentals. You can also ask your credit card company if they offer some type of car rental insurance, which most of the time they do.
