What to Ask a Heating and Cooling Contractor

by Jason K. Content Manager
So, you have home heating and cooling work that needs to be taken care of, but you just not that experienced with the equipment or communicating with a contractor. There are some questions you should ask your HVAC contractor before committing to hiring them for the job.

Are they Nate certified?

Many of the questions will have to do with the contractor themselves. You want to be assured they are not only knowledgeable in their trade, but are also certified by the necessary entities.

First, ask them for their state-issued license number, which you can confirm with the National Contractor License Service. It's wise to work with a contractor who is also NATE certified (North American Technician Excellence). Besides certifying that the contractor is up to date on the latest practices in the HVAC industry, but they are often affiliated with ENERGY STAR, to assure you have energy efficient appliances.

Is the contractor insured?

In nearly every installation or repair scenario, the job will be completed smoothly. But in that rare instance that problems may arise, it’s important to know that the contractor is backed by an insurance policy. Be sure the HVAC company has worker's compensation and liability insurance that will cover damage to your home or injury to the contractor.

How long have they been in business?

Every quality and reputable contractor has to start somewhere, but it’s nice to know that they have some experience under their belt. For young contractors who see this as a catch 22, if they are working for a company that has a track record to back them, that can count as well.

It’s not enough to have been around for a long time. Ask them for references from multiple past customers who are willing to vouch for their work.

What, if any, maintenance do you need to do?

Even if you aren't the handy type, there could still be some basic maintenance you need to pencil in for your home heating and cooling appliances. If you’re unsure, speak with the contractor about their recommendations. How often should you changed filters? How often should you have a professional come in for check-ups?

This is just the beginning. Brainstorm for yourself what questions you might have and write them down. Don’t be shy about having your notes with you, so you don’t forget when interviewing a prospective contractor.
