What Should I Study in College? Ask yourself before taking admissions

by Randhir Pandey Team Lead - Marketing

Most students who are on the brink of completing their high school hear from their parents that their life will be completely sorted as long as they secure good grades in their high school exams. And, once they do manage to do that the next thing that parents claim is that their future and life will be secure once they take admission in the best university and pick the right career path. But, does this drill to success ever end? You go on to achieve one thing and immediately another target is set, and sometimes people feel that there is actually no end to all this madness.

Nonetheless, it is also true that post-high school it becomes very crucial for a student to think straight and actually ask the right question before picking up a major or a subject in which they want to specialize in. Often it is also true that in the earlier days of our parents there were not so many choices and alternatives to career and subject of choice. But, with the most recent changes in the arena of education, students face the challenge of choosing the right subject that can bring maximum security to them in the form of a stable job and income at a later stage in life.

Remember that when you decide to elect a certain field of studies in college there is no looking back. Which is why it is very important to make sure that you make the right choice. In order to break this never-ending dilemma which is often coupled with the question of deciding which college to go to, we bring to a series of questions that you need to ask yourself before saying “ I will do”.

Answer the WHY of choosing a certain subject: most often we come across instances when students decide to follow dreams but dream that others and not they themselves see. We have often heard students say that they chose a subject or field because their parents did the same, or worse because some of their friends have taken the same. Trust us, there is nothing more dangerous than siding with a subject that you are not passionate about. When you are at the stage when you need to select a major, make sure you ask yourself the question of why you want to study it. If any of the answers are similar to once given above, then please you know you need to hit the reverse button and rethink your options.

Answer the WHAT about the course before selecting it: so you want to take up engineering or let’s say forensic science, but what are all the criteria and syllabus is there. Most of the times just like we buy a book judging its cover, students end up by taking up a course because of a fancy name and the way it sounds. This often results in the biggest mistake because they have no clue as to what the syllabus and the content will be like. Make sure that before you sign up to take a subject, you know it inside out and know what you are going to be up against.

Understanding the HOW GOOD of the college that you chose: we often come across terms and statements that say “The University of Chicago ranks number 1 for its robotics course”, but do we actually understand what all these specifications are about? It is very imperative to understand that when you decide to choose a subject or field, you also need to check whether the college that you are opting for makes it their star performer as well. You might end up choosing a course for which the college is not able to provide and because of this, you might end up facing the brunt.

Questioning the WHAT of the career choices that you have: when HR professionals ask the question “where do you see yourself in the next 5 years” there is a reason to it. Often students and most young adults make the mistake of being short-sighted. In the scenario when they have to select a college major they often go by the current trends and fail to ask how relevant will the same trend be a few years down the line. Let’s face it, the reason why you are put in college is so that you can have a stable job and earnings, but if you choose a field that doesn’t have a decent shelf life, now that is a phase you will not want to see. So, study the options that you can have a post doing graduation with a certain subject and then go ahead with it in full swing.

Asking the IF of whether you have spoken to others from the same field: contrary to what the first point was, it is always good to hear some success stories of people around you who have taken the same road that you plan on taking. It’s one thing to get influenced and let that influence cloud your judgement, and another thing altogether when you know the pros and cons before deciding on anything. It will be a great idea if you take a timeout and consult people around you who have probably taken the same route and then take the final call. In cases like this, it will be best to speak to your seniors who you know have done the same thing. They will give you the real picture without painting a rosy picture.

/ Every student or academician might have a different opinion on it but I move about in the crowd that does value and honour academic ethics but does not take it overboard. We all have access to only 24 hours and there is so much that we want to do when we are in college. How can one expect a student to explore different aspects of college life without any kind of academic paper writing help to complete the course requirements within ever-looming deadlines? /

Keeping all these points aside, let us bring to the forefront the main reason why you need to consider all these questions before you actually go ahead with a certain course or subject. Understand that the moment you say yes to a certain course it means signing a contract for the rest of your life. All your future job aspects and the kind of work that you will be told to do depend on this one point. If you are willing to commit to this one field for the rest of your life and are truly passionate about it, then definitely go ahead and excel in it.
