What Should I Look For In A Personal Trainer?

by Neighborhood Trainers Finding a trainer is a personal choice

Making the decision to hire a personal trainer is a major step in anyone’s fitness journey. Not only have you acknowledged that you must join a gym to become fitter and healthier, but you are committed to doing it in the right way.

Many people see fitness trainers as unnecessary and overpriced. But a personal trainer is the resource a beginner needs if they are to make proper fitness gains in a healthy way.

Fitness trainers ensure you are working out the right muscle groups, eating healthy and remaining on course to achieve your goals. But what factors determine the quality of a trainer?

Credentials

If a trainer cannot show you their credentials, they are not worth your time. They should be able to indicate their credentials through certifications such as the ACE, NASM or NSCA. These credentials mean they passed exams or have the requisite experience to give you the proper advice about fitness and/or diet tips.

Experience

While every trainer must start somewhere, a fitness beginner will be better off with a more experienced trainer. You are learning the ropes, understanding the value of different exercises and building a fitness routine for the first time. If your trainer is learning on the job, your weekly routine may not be as polished as it should be.

Personality

We are all different. No two people can be motivated in the same way. You could meet the most qualified and experienced trainer in the area. But if your personality clashes, it is a bad fit. Find Yorktown personal trainers who are not only certified and experienced, but have the type of personality that you appreciate.

Specialty

When you try to find a personal trainer in the Yorktown area, look for trainers who specialize in the areas that you care about. For instance, if you are focused on losing weight, work with a trainer that has helped others lose weight before.

If your fitness trainer is most experienced at helping people gain muscle and transition into bodybuilding, they may not be the right fit for you.

When you can find a trainer who is friendly, qualified, experienced and specializing in the fitness area that you care about, you will have found the ideal match. Then you can sit down with your trainer, tell them about your goals and make a plan to make those goals a reality. When you have days where you lack the motivation to work out, your trainer will be there to pick you up.
