What Makes The Knitting Yarn Sustainable | Amazing Facts

by Rajiv Pratap Singh Digital Marketing Expert

If you ever visit a local crafts store, you can see the bundle of yarns (with soft materials & bright colors). However, there is a hard truth behind these amazing looking weaving yarns. Fibers made of acrylic are of inferior quality. They are toxic to the people involved in crafting and ultimately to the ones who wear them.

Nylon & Polyester have chemical dyes that are harmful to the skin. The synthetic fibers are not biodegradable, which havoc our planet, including animals. The fibers break down into millions of tiny plastic microfibers that lead to chronic diseases.

Remember, our mothers perfectly crocheting new blankets or warm sweaters. In traditional times, handmade things were on-trend, and it still continues. Even big companies use knitting yarns to introduce the final products to you. Make sure to look for natural fibers or eco-friendly yarns that also ensure ethical sourcing and environmental safety.

Heart-Wrenching Truth About Synthetic Yarn Fibres

➤ Nylon:

Econyl is a new and better version of nylon that is eco-friendly. In 2011 it was introduced by Aquafil. The material is derived from landfill or ocean waste, even using fabric scraps of the textile industry. Econyl fiber prevents global warming as well as can be recycled without deteriorating the quality. Nylon is highly energy-intensive and is non- biodegradable.

➤ Acrylics:

Acrylics closely resemble wool but are not eco-friendly. They are cheap and low in quality. Moreover, the storing, disposable, and polymerization process of acrylic fibers emit toxic fumes, which is a significant threat to human health. They are neither biodegradable nor recycled easily.

➤Polyester:

Polyester is a composition of plastic microfibres and impacts not only humans but also ocean life. They are carbon-intensive and not good in quality as polyester's knitted sweaters don't stay too long.

Those who are not aware of synthetic dyes' disastrous impact should know it's a negative aspect. It makes your outfit look amazing with bright colors but has deleterious production. The chemical dyes are washed off into streams and rivers that led to water pollution.

How Sustainable Yarn Makes a Difference?

Nowadays, brands are cautious about their images. They want to have a good reputation in the market and a positive brand building. Learn some amazing facts about sustainable yarn:

➤ Ethically Sourced Wool

You might be wondering how wool can be a part of sustainable business? One needs to dig deep and see how the animals are treated for getting wool. Ethically sourced wool is beneficial as it removes carbon from the atmosphere.

➤ Upcycled Yarn

Brands now deal with upcycled yarn fibers as they have low carbon and don't damage the environment by giving a second life to the oceans. They use recycled melange yarn to have different shades in the fiber (to make it look beautiful). In contrast, pure synthetic fibers deal with microfibre issues and are threatening to the environment.

➤ Organic Cotton

Many people love the outfits of cotton material. It is comfortable and lets your skin breathe properly. Especially in summers, cotton textiles work magically. However, the production of organic cotton is done without any toxic chemicals or harmful synthetic fertilizers.

It's better to be curious to know from manufacturers how the fiber is processed? Not every natural fiber is sustainable as they are covered with plastic that makes them more soft and smooth.
