What is it that Indian parents are collectively doing wrong?

Yesterday I went to watch Raazi with my cousins. All of us were enjoying the movie when I sensed a jerk in my chair. Someone was kicking my chair from behind. The first thought that came to my mind was that it must be some pervert doing all this. It stopped and I thought that I will give him a good scolding if he does that again.

After some time I again felt that someone was kicking my chair. I was very much irritated by now. I turned back and to my surprise it was a small boy merely 6 to 7 years old. I calmed down.

There was a couple sitting in the row behind mine and the kid was theirs. I didn’t want to scold the child so I asked him politely to keep his legs back.

I again went on to enjoy the movie only when I again felt the same jerk. I turned back and this time I asked his mother to make him sit properly. I was shocked on seeing the mother’s reaction.

Forget about scolding the child, she didn’t even bother to ask him to sit properly. Not once did she care to ask her child to stop disturbing others. All she said was, “baccha hai abhi” (he is just a kid now). And the boy kept on disturbing not just me but everybody around throughout the movie.

Yes exactly, he is a kid, he doesn’t know what is right and what is wrong. But you are not a kid. If parents will not teach their children how to behave in public then who else will. If you do not correct your child’s mistake at the right time, if you do not tell him how to behave in public places, he will obviously think that it’s okay to kick others chair in a cinema hall. How will he realize that it’s wrong if you will just smile at his mistakes.

Everybody loves their children and nobody likes scolding them but what is wrong must be corrected there and then.

I remember as a child how my parents would correct me everytime I talked rudely to elders or when I didn’t keep my plate in the sink myself after dinner at relatives place, when I didn’t wish my elders or when I created nuisance when I went out for dinner.

So it’s the parents responsibility to teach their children the right way to act in public. No matter how much you love your child, if you love them, you can tolerate their misbehavior why would anybody else in the cinema hall tolerate it?

People come for a movie to relax and spend some quality time with their friends, family etc. Parents should make sure that their children do not spoil the leisure time of others.
