meaning of e-learning

eLearning is a systemized process of learning via electronic means. It is different from the traditional process of learning where the learners and the educator both are required to be present in the classroom.

But in e-learning, teachers, and students do not need to physically interact with each other to facilitate the learning process. Unlike traditional learning, eLearning does not need a physical classroom. A virtual classroom is created using specially designed software, like skype, zoom, and google meet, over the internet.

Difference Between eLearning and Traditional learning

Medium - eLearning is exactly what it sounds like. It happens over the internet using virtual meeting software. However, traditional learning happens offline in a physical classroom. All the participants are needed to travel to the classroom.

Schedule - In eLearning, there is the flexibility to choose your schedule. You do not need to be at a specific place to take part in the learning process. But in the case of traditional learning, a strict schedule has to be followed.

No of participants - An individual can take part in eLearning alone. He or she does not need to be a part of a group of learners. However, in the case of traditional learning, you are usually accompanied by your fellow classmates or colleagues.

Method of learning -  e-learning allows you to learn independently. It supports an independent style of learning. But in the case of traditional learning, it is based on learning from each other and learning with each other. Sharing of an individual's knowledge or experience is appreciated.

Interaction - In eLearning, your interaction with the educator or teacher is limited to your screen. You can neither interact with the teacher nor with fellow learners in a physical sense. However, in traditional classroom learning, you enjoy extensive interaction with colleagues or classmates and teachers.

Benefits of e-learning

Quick Skill Learning - It is the quickest way to learn anything in the comfort of your home. While learning in the classroom or studying with the group. Some of the students may not ask their doubts clearly due to the shy nature of peer pressure. But in the case of online education, no such problems exist. It allows you to get skills that can easily put you into a great MBA school, or the dream job you always wanted.

Performance record - In online studies, you do not need to wait for the exams to take place and then again wait for the results to come out. You can take the self-assessment tests right after the class and assess your performance and knowledge. It gives you a real-time performance record.

Creative methods -  With the help of surveys, polls, and instant quizzes. Learning can be made more fun and engaging process. By taking creative methods, teachers can develop an interest among the students to learn.

Fewer Distractions - You have less or no distractions in case of attending online classes. The pressure of someone behind your back as you work/learn. All gone. It’s just you, the tutor, and your lesson. And with the kind of technology at our disposal, it’s easier to learn one-on-one with visual cues and online tools.
