What is Covered By Church Insurance?

by Glenn Morkel insurance

Church insurance is specialty insurance. This isn’t something that everyone will need to pick up, but it is available under the circumstances if you own a church. Churches are a non-profit organization under the IRS, but that doesn’t mean they are exempt from certain liabilities. It would make sense that as a property owner or an established organization that you carry some protection against the what-ifs. Below are just a few reasons you should consider purchasing church insurance for your religious organization or shop around for better options.

Theft

Theft happens to almost everyone. No one is safe. For churches, one of the original features they give to the community is an open door sanctuary. Churches are there in times of trouble and allow their doors to be open 24-7 for the most part. This allows for people to enter whenever they like, which can make a church vulnerable to theft. Though they aren’t primary targets for thievery, it can happen. Having affordable church insurance can guard against theft of things like religious pieces, statutes, and other valuables.

Fire/Flood

Just like homeowners insurance, you’ll want to guard the church against potential hazards like fire and flood. Though it is a house of worship and we’d like to think a building is immune from these horrible acts, the fire at Notre Dame all made us realize it’s important to be protected. Acts of fire and flood can happen to any property if there is water and electricity. Taking the proper precautions is essential; otherwise, risk the loss of the church.

Liabilities

What if someone were to fall on your property? Though you are a church, it doesn’t relinquish your responsibility as a property owner. Being a non-profit typically applies to your tax status, not how things are in the community. Remembering to salt stairs and altering patrons that there is a wet floor isn’t enough sometimes, and accidents can happen. With church insurance, you’ll never have to worry that one of your visitors won’t be covered if an accident occurs on your property.

Churches can be insured for the property value or the estimated cost for replacing the property. Often the intricate workings of a church, such as stone or woodworking and stained glass windows, cost much more to repair. This should be taken into consideration, as well as have an appraisal done. Many church insurance rates are highly affordable and customizable to fit the needs and budget of the organization.
