Read on to discover more about cabinet refacing and decide whether or not it is the best option for you and your kitchen updating goals.

Cabinets – Should we reface, replace, or paint?

What Is Cabinet Refacing?

Cabinet refacing (as the word might imply) is a lot like giving your cabinet a facelift. There are no big layout or structural changes that go into a refacing. Instead, the outer appearance of your cabinets gets an update.

This process generally involves stripping off any cabinet drawers and hardware and then replacing them if necessary. You'll then apply a matching veneer to the exterior of all cabinet doors to update the appearance of all visible surfaces.

How Does It Work?

Cabinet refacing takes several steps and can take varying lengths of time depending on the layout of your kitchen. The first step, as we've already stated, is removing all cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware. You can also decide to replace old hardware if desired for an added cost.

Then, you'll apply either a veneer or a Rigid Thermofoil (or RTF) to the cabinet's front-facing sections. This then allows the cabinets to be covered with a new wood veneer or laminate.

If the hinges are still in good condition, you can leave them on. Otherwise, you'll replace the old hinges and return all doors and drawer fronts to their original positions. Then, you can add back your old or updated hardware as desired.

Refacing vs. Refinishing vs. Resurfacing

There are lots of terms that get thrown around when it comes to kitchen remodels. It is important to be able to distinguish between them so as to be sure of what you want in your own kitchen update.

We've already discussed how refacing is essentially giving your kitchen an exterior "facelift." But how does that differ from refinishing or resurfacing

Resurfacing is actually a term that is used almost interchangeably with refacing in cabinet remodels. These two terms essentially mean the same thing.

Refinishing, on the other hand, sounds similar to refacing, but it actually involves keeping all components of your existing cabinetry. Instead of replacing the exterior surface, you can simply add a change of color or finish through sanding, painting, and/or stains.

How Much Does It Cost?

Cabinet refacing does involve several steps so while you can try to DIY, it is often best left to a professional. Depending on how much of your existing hardware needs to be replaced and what kind of materials you like, refacing can definitely vary in costs.

However, cabinet refacing is going to cost you significantly less than a full kitchen redesign and will still give a major change to your kitchen. In order to get a realistic estimate, it's best to contact a professional.
