What Is a Headless Content Management System, and Why Do You Need One?

by Seller Ben Buisness

A headless CMS is a content management system that divides information production, storage, and distribution. Headless content management systems (CMSes) don't manage the display layer of a website like traditional CMSes do; instead, they just manage content and make it accessible through APIs so that various devices can use it.

Why Use a Headless Content Management System?

Modern content management or Knowledge Management encompasses the creation of textual, structured, and multimedia information and its distribution via many channels, including the World Wide Web, e-commerce, mobile apps, personal gadgets like smart watches, and digital signage systems in retail establishments.

User location, language, behavior, and preferences may also tailor the experience. Because of this, the material has to be as decoupled as possible from the audience and the channel through which it is consumed.

Headless Content Management is primarily concerned with managing material, including its structure, reusability, presets, versions, roles and permissions, collaboration, workflow stages, etc.

Who can use headless content management?

You can use a headless content management system if:

  • You prefer to work in your chosen language and framework
  • You have access to front-end development tools
  • You must keep your procedures flexible while delivering projects following JAMStack's guiding principles
  • There are many different languages and devices involved in your project
  • To effectively showcase your material, you'll need a custom layout
  • New features and fixes are introduced regularly

Conclusion

The management of material might be a time-consuming and boring task, but someone has to do it. A reliable Content Hub or CMS may save time and effort for developers. While headless content management systems (CMSes) aren't the greatest fit for every web development project, you should at least be aware of them as an alternative.
