What Does Blue Light Do to Your Eyes?

by BluTech Lenses Blue Light Filter Glasses

Contrary to the belief, blue light is actually said to be beneficial due to a number of reasons. It elevates your mood, boosts alertness, and regulates the circadian rhythm. A deficiency may contribute to several illnesses.

However, excessive blue light exposure is what wrecks the system. The fact that it penetrates directly into the retina can damage your vision and cause other related problems.

But what is blue light after all?

Sun’s light, indoor wall switches, LED bulbs, digital devices – all these expose your eyes to numerous visible light rays, including blue light, that vary in effects. Generally, blue light is defined as a high-energy visible (HEV) light that ranges between 380 and 500 nm. HEV is a short wavelength that produces a higher amount of energy. It has both benefits and disadvantages for the human eye.

Sunlight is the primary source of blue light, and during the daytime, you’re most exposed to this light. It easily scatters, and that’s what gives the cloudless sky its blue color. Moreover, our eyes are not good at blocking the blue light we are mostly surrounded by.

Blue light and the human eye

What does blue light do to the human eye? It passes through the cornea into the lens and reaches the retina. Several studies have shown how too much blue light exposure may damage the retina’s light-sensitive cells. Exposure through smartphones, computer screens, and other such digital devices that we tend to use daily leave us vulnerable to macular deterioration later in life.

Since blue light scatters so easily than other visible light rays, it adds to digital eye strain. This further leads to premature aging of the eyes. The unfocused visual noise lowers contrast intensity and causes dry eyes, fatigue, redness, soreness, difficulty in focusing, irritation, and much more. You also don’t need blue light to sleep as it may disturb your sleep cycles leading to daytime tiredness.

Blue blocking protective eyewear

If your daily routine involves constant working on the phone or computer, a convenient way of reducing blue light exposure is to use blue-blocking glasses. These special-purpose, tinted glasses significantly increase the contrast, making it comfortable for you to view digital devices for prolonged periods without damaging your vision. If there’s no need for vision correction, you may get the glasses from a nearby store or online without a prescription. But we still advise talking to a specialist for better understanding.
