Indeed making leather consumes time, effort and good quality of leather finishing chemicals, helping the best leather to reach your home. However when it comes to fathoming the tanning process, then you must not forget that leather is split across its thickness to produce a top layer and the under layer.

The very process of tanning requires five stages:

·         Pre-Tanning

·         Tanning

·         Selecting

·         Dressing

·         Finishing

Let’s take a quick look at the leather tanning process in this post…

Step 1: Pre-Tanning

·         Soaking- Here leather is soaked to remove salt, used in preserving leather.

·         Liming - Hair, and epidermis are removed and a solution of leather processing chemicals, like lime and sodium sulfide, is applied to make the hide turn into soft.

·         Splitting- Now hide is split into layers; the top layer is used for producing smooth grain leather & bottom is used for suede.

Step 2: Tanning

In this process, the pre-tanned hide is converted into leather, wherein mineral tanning is done with alkaline chrome-3 salts. However, the other tanning methods are:

·         Pure Vegetable Tanning

·         Synthetic Tanning

·         Oil Tanning

·         Combination Tanning

Step 3: Selecting

Once tanning is done excess water is removed, and the hides are then graded according to the quantity and locations of natural features and flaws.

Step 4: Dressing

This process requires the following steps:

·         Shaving- Hides get a uniform thickness.

·         Dyeing – To add colors, dyes are used.

·         Re-tanning – Some additional leather tanning chemicals are added to make the leather fit the need.

·         Setting – Here creases & excess water is removed

·         Drying – Now hides are stretched dried on large frames or vacuum dried.

·         Trimming- Removing of rough and ragged edges are removed.

Step 5: Finishing

In this step, Leather Finishing agents are used to enhance the natural beauty of the leather product. It ensures and locks the required gloss, gives a more protective surface and gives an antique look.
