What are the different types of hair brush or comb?

by Pathlie Lee Business consultant

If you’ve been to a beauty supply store or even a big-box retailer lately, you’ve probably seen just how big a business hair care can be. People love to have products and tools that are tailored to their needs, and this is especially true when it comes to brushes and combs.

Unfortunately, having so many options can leave some consumers feeling overwhelmed. What are the differences in all of those brushes and combs, anyway - and how can you be sure you’re choosing the right one for your hair type and needs? Take a look at this guide to choosing the right tools for your tresses:

Brushes to Brush Up On

Brushes are the most common tool for women or those with longer hair to use for styling and general grooming. Choosing the right brush is important, though, since the wrong one can actually do more harm than good. Here are a few key types of brushes to note:

Round brushes - Round brushes are great for styling, especially when combined with the use of heat. Be careful if you’re inexperienced, though, since these brushes can lead to tangles or static when improperly used.

Paddle or flat brushes - Great everyday brushes, these are good for lessening static, removing tangles, and keeping hair neat and tidy. Some are even made for use on wet hair, making them great for use in or right after the shower. (Other brushes should never be used when hair is wet since this can increase the risk of damage to the hair.)

Vented brushes - This type of brush is great for those who blow dry since the heat is able to reach hair more easily. This also lessens heat-related damage.

Natural bristle brushes - For finer or delicate hair that craves shine, natural bristles are a great solution. They gently distribute natural oils throughout strands to increase shine and improve hair health.

Synthetic bristle brushes - Cheaper and stronger than natural bristle brushes, these sturdy bristles are great for hair that needs help with tangles.

Mixed bristle brushes - These brushes combine the best of natural and synthetic bristles to give most hair types the most benefits at the best price point.

There are also many types of specialty brushes available, but be sure to check out the basics before investing in one-trick ponies that you might not need!

Combing the Racks for Combs

Combs are more than a styling tool; they can be a status symbol and an accessory, too. Some men purposely buy nice combs just to flash them from their pockets!

If you’re looking for something more practical, though, stick with brands trusted by beauticians, like YS Park combs. These come in a variety of styles and designs, including:

Wide-tooth combs - These combs have teeth set wider from one another, to help remove tangles and allow for use by those with thick, coarse, or curly hair.

Medium-tooth combs - These are everyday combs, best for most hair types and methods of grooming.

Fine-tooth combs - These combs are great for finer hair and intricate styling work.

Rat-tail combs - These combs may have any type of tooth structure and feature a long, pointed “tail” at one end, used for precise parting and styling.

To see all of your choices when it comes to brushes and combs, use this guide as your starting point and browse the selection at your favorite beauty supply retailer. You’ll be surprised at just how many options there are - and how easy it can be to find the perfect ones for you when you know how!
