Ways To Have Smarter Oral Care Habits

by Dylan Callahan IT Consultant
A bright, clean and healthy smile, not only makes you look younger, but also gives you confidence to a social and professional success. Moreover, a healthy mouth can create a healthier body. Researches have been proved, that a good oral health can minimize your risk for heart disease, pregnancy complications or breast cancer.

Although your dentist can help you maintain your dental health, you have to do your part at home to keep dental issues at bay. Choose products that are approved by ADA (Australian Dental Association). That ensure that the products – toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, etc. - are safe to use and will keep your mouth health.

Here are few ways to have a smarter oral care habits:

Smart Brushing

Brushing your teeth smartly will help you keep our teeth clean while preventing cavities and  gum disease. Consider these brushing basics from the Australian Dental Association:

Brush your teeth at least two times a day - And when you brush, don't do it in a rush. Take enough time to do a good job.

Use the proper tools - Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably and a fluoride toothpaste. To reduce plaque and a mild form of gum disease you can consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush, which is known to be more efficient than manual brushing.

Practice good technique – By holding your toothbrush at a slight angle, gently brush your teeth with short back-and-forth motions. Do not forget to brush the outside, inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue.

Keep your equipment clean - It is very important that you always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Also, that you store it in an upright position, and allow it to air-dry until next time you have to use it again. And last, but not least, don't cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers (except when traveling), as this can encourage the growth of bacteria.

Be reasonable when to replace your toothbrush – Change your toothbrush or a replace the head for your electric or battery-operated toothbrush every three to four months. But if you notice that the bristles has become frayed, change it sooner.

Smart Flossing

Since you can't reach the tight spaces between your teeth and under the gum-line with a toothbrush, a daily flossing is essential in order to keep a good oral care.

Don't be cheap - Take off about 45 centimeters of dental floss.

Be gentle – Use a rubbing motion to guide the floss between your teeth. Don't just bang the floss into your gums.

Keep it up - If handling floss is a little difficult for you, consider an interdental cleaner like for example, a special plastic or wooden pick, stick or brush designed to clean between the teeth.

Extra oral health care tip

In addition to daily brushing and flossing, you can also consider using a mouth rinse containing  antimicrobial or fluoride components to enhance oral health.
