Ways to Encourage a Safe Working Environment for Your Business

by George Henry Publisher
Taking care of your employees’ security is important. Here are some ways you can encourage and implement safety practices for your business.
Have a Plan
One of the first ways you can begin to encourage a safe working environment is to have good safety plans in place. The amount, type, and detail of the plans you will need to implement will depend on the size and industry your business is conducted in. All businesses, whether small or large, hazardous or nonhazardous, should have a few basic safety plans in place to deal with weather, crime, fire, and health or medical situations.
Ask for your employees’ input as you formulate these plans, they may have good ideas on how to implement safety procedures or streamline processes. Once you have a plan in place be sure to educate employees, run drills, and make any changes that need to be made to ensure the processes are still relevant as your business changes and grows.
Nonphysical Elements
Along with physical situations, there are nonphysical situations that could jeopardize the employees’ mental or emotional well being. Some examples would be internet hacking, identity theft, intellectual property theft, harassment, and bullying. To protect your company’s intellectual property you should use strong passwords, educate staff about internet safety, and give different levels of security clearance to senior versus incoming staff.
According to a survey by CareerBuilder 28 percent of respondents had experienced bullying at work, and nearly 1 in 5 had left their job because of it. A positive corporate culture that discourages workplace bullying starts at the top. Set a good example for employees by displaying positive characteristics and encourage team building and camaraderie. It is a good idea to hire an HR manager, office manager, or company ethics director to promote the positive mental and emotional health of employees and corporate culture. This person can ensure that harassment, bullying, and other negative behaviors are dealt with accordingly and that positive behavior are encouraged instead.
Physical Elements
One of the easiest ways to promote workplace safety physically is to keep the space organized and clean. Small spills, tripping hazards, loose wires, and other obstacles can lead to potentially dangerous situations. Encourage employees to keep the space clean and organized, and provide any safety equipment, like a fire extinguisher, or gas leakage detection system, that is needed. Keep all back doors to the building locked, all entryways and parking lots well lit, and have other prevention techniques in place to discourage crime or robbery.
Another good idea is to comply with OSHA standards. This will help you identify what safety regulations are required for your industry, like a gas leakage detection system if you work with hazardous gases, etc. By taking steps to promote the safety of your employees you are helping your business and your brand.
