Wayanad district was formed out of carving of Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Karnataka borders it in north and north-east, Tamil Nadu in the south-east, Malappuram in the south, Kozhikode in south-west and Kannur in the north-west.
According to the 2011 census Idukki
district has a population of 817,420. The literacy rate is 89.03%. Wayanad is
having highest no. of tribals in Kerala. There are 8 schedule tribals, namely
Adiyan, Kattuniakkan, Kurichyan, Mullukkurman, Paniyan, Vettakkuruman, Wayanad
Kadar, and Thachaanadan Mooppan.
The best time to visit Wayanad is between October to May, for sightseeing, wildlife tours, trekking and other outdoor activities. For nature lovers, the best time is to visit during the rainy season from June to September when Wayanad will cover itself with greenery. It is also one of the unexplored hill stations in kerala.
Places to see and visit in Wayanad
Chembra Peak:
It is situated at 6,890 feet above
sea level, and it is the highest peak in the Wayanad Hill Range, encompassed by
verdant greenery of the Western Ghats with mesmerising views, you can touch the
clouds with your hands, and your eyes get soothed with the gentle touch of
nature, and you start feeling its aura all around. It is a trekking paradise. Chembra Peak is 40 Km from Wayanad bus stand.
It is the heart-shaped lake also
known as the Cupid Lake. The view of
Banasura Sagar Dam surrounded the majestic tea plantations located along the
foothills of Chembra Peak can be seen.
Banasura Sagar Dam:
The dam is situated along the
Karamanathodu River. It is said to be the largest dam in India. The second
largest earth dam in Asia. The dam is ideally placed in the foothills of
Banasura hills, is named after 'Banasura', the son of King Mahabali, the famous
ruler of Kerala. The dam has hydroelectric power project to meet the water
demand for irrigation and drinking purposes. Banasura Sagar Dam is 2.3 KM from
Wayanad bus stand.
Kuruva Island:
It is located in the middle of
Kabini river, a natural paradise that is replete with diverse flora and fauna
in the most beautiful surroundings. It is a good picnic and trekking spot,
blessed with evergreen forests all around with calm and quiet atmosphere.
Kuruva Island is 36 KM from Wayanad bus stand.
The Bamboo Factory:
The Bamboo Factory is for uplifting
the lives of many rural craftsmen as well as offering tourists a unique
experience by getting to know how bamboo is converted into favourite items. At

Pookode Lake:
It is a freshwater lake that is
surrounded by the evergreen beauty of Western Ghats and verdant forests. The beauty
of Pookode Lake is that it is in the shape of India’s physical map. It offers
activities like boating and boasts of a freshwater aquarium, a children’s park
and a shopping centre having excellent spices and handicrafts. Pookode Lake is having widespread presence of
wild animals and birds which another attraction. Pookode Lake is 27 KM from
Wayanad bus stand.
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary:
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the unforgettable experiences of wildlife with elephant herds, deer, langurs, panthers, tigers, Indian bison and the rare Slender Loris roaming freely in their natural surroundings. Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is also famous for harbouring a variety of flora and fauna. Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is 45 KM from Wayanad bus stand.
How to reach:
By Air: The nearest airport is at Kozhikode, and one can proceed by road reach Wayanad.
By Train: Wayanad does not have a railway station. The nearest railway station is Kozhikode from there one can proceed by road reach Wayanad.
By Road: The distance between
Kozhikode and Wayanad is 87 KM. Buses, Rental Cars are available.
