Introduction

Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players compete against one other by batting a ball back and forth over a high net, attempting to get the ball to contact the court inside the opponents' playing area before it can be returned to the players' side.

History

Inventor William G. Morgan, physical director of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, is credited with the invention of best leather volleyball in 1895. It was created as an indoor activity for business people who felt that the new basketball game was too physically demanding. Morgan referred to the sport as "mignonette" until a professor from Springfield College in Massachusetts noticed the volleying feature of the game and suggested the term "volleyball." Morgan agreed.


Concerning the Game

Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players compete against each other. Before the ball may be returned, the players must use their hands to bat the ball over the net, attempting to make the ball contact the court inside the opponents' playing area. Volleyball is a sport that can be played both inside and outdoors with the bare minimum of equipment and space.

Volleyball matches are composed of sets, the number of which varies depending on the level of competition. Matches in three sets are played to 25 points in the first two sets and 15 points in the third set. Each group must be won by a margin of two points or more. The winning team is the one that wins two sets in a row. Matches in five sets are played to 25 points in the first four sets and 15 points in the final set.

Rules

  • When the ball is in play, players are not permitted to take any steps beyond the center line.
  • Only three touches of the ball are allowed by a side before the holographic reflective volleyball must be returned over the goal line. "Pass," "Set," and "Attack" are the names given to the three touches, which are performed sequentially.
  • There are six players on the floor at any one moment: three in the front row and three in the back row.
  • Every serve for the winning team in a rally result in a point awarded (rally-point scoring).
  • A player is not permitted to hit the ball more than once in a row (A block is not considered a hit).
  • It is against the law to catch, hold, or throw a best leather volleyball.
  • Following the service, the front-line players can alter places at the baseline.
  • The incorrect serve results in a point being awarded to the other side.


Terminologies

The sideline is the outside perimeter of the court that runs the length of the court.

The ending of the baseline is the outside limit of the court and the width of the court.

Attack line: A three-meter line divides the frontcourt from the backcourt, and it is significant in terms of which player may attack or smash the ball over the net while the game is in the frontcourt.

During a rally, the ball may be played in a free zone three meters wide and surrounds the whole court.

Backcourt refers to the portion of the court in front of the attack.

Backcourt: The portion of the court immediately in front of the attack line.

Ace: A serve those results in a point on the spot, generally when the ball touches the floor on the receiving team's side of the court without being touched by anybody.

The term cross-court assault refers to an attack aimed diagonally from the point of contact. An angle hit is another term for this.

Dump: Delivering the ball into the other team's court on the second contact. The setting team usually executes it.

Underhand serve: A serve delivered by hitting the ball with the underhand motion. The heel of the hand is often used to make contact with the holographic reflective volleyball.
