Maharashtra is a state with great diversity. Forts, mountains, temples and the festivals make Maharashtra a stunning place to visit. Here is a short list of must-visit caves in Maharashtra.



Maharashtra attracts a large number of tourists each year. September to April is the apt time to explore the state and its attractions. The state has some famous caves in the country. The caves were not merely the home of primitive people. The caves provide a huge knowledge of the early lives, their culture, religious and social practices as well.


The caves in Maharashtra possess architectural uniqueness which is a great attraction of the place. The interesting caves of Maharashtra are visited by a large number of tourists every year. Here is a list of 4 must-visit caves for the history buffs.



1) Ajanta Caves: Ajanta Caves is a world famous cave. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a treasure for the archaeologists and history buffs. Being a tourist, you will enjoy the flawless work inside the caves. It is a 32 rock-cut caves dating back to 2nd century BC. Ajanta Caves are the Buddhist caves, the artistic masterpiece is described by the Archaeological Survey of India as “the finest surviving examples of Indian art”. The paintings inside depict the Buddhists art. The chaityas and viharas inside the caves still stand strong.


It is not possible to define the beauty of Ajanta in words. You should visit the place and experience the ancient masterpiece. From Mumbai, Ajanta is 451 km away and from Aurangabad the place is 110 km. The best option to travel to Ajanta caves is from Aurangabad.



2) Ellora caves: The cave dates back to 1500 year ago and is built in the form of 34 rock cut caves. Buddhist, Hindu and Jain religious monuments can be seen here. In 1983, the Ellora caves were given the status of World Heritage Site. Ellora is just 100 km away from Ajanta caves. Aurangabad is a great place to explore and Ajanta and Ellora are its main fame to claim. The very famous Ellora caves is a proof of harmony during that period of history.



3) Elephanta Cave: Elephanta Cave is a well-known spot in Mumbai. One of the best parts of visiting Elephanta cave is that you have to take a boat and explore the Arabian Sea to reach the cave. Elephanta Island is about 10 km from Mumbai. The cave, amidst the lush green, is a treat to the visitors. The ancient cave temples on the island are an added attractions of the place. So, when you are planning a trip to Maharashtra, visit to Elephanta cave is a must. Such a wonderfully maintained island that too near the great city Mumbai is truly a gift of history.



4) Mangi Tungi Hills: The stairs leading to Mangi Tungi Hills is adventurous. Mangi Tungi is the twin hills in Nashik district and it houses the Jain caves. Situated in the picturesque Western Ghat, Mangi Tungi is beautiful. The view from the top of the hills is a spectacular one. The Jain icons carved on the rock makes the cave an example of great artwork.



Exploring this above mentioned caves are not a hectic task. For Mangi Tungi Hills, you can travel from Nashik, Taharabad or Satana by bus or car. The best route to travel to Ajanta and Ellora is from Aurangabad. You can check Aurangabad to Hyderabad train for more details.
