Varieties Of Cutting Tools

by Mr Peter Peter Smith

Cutting tools or cutters as we say can be any tools that can be used to remove material from the workpiece either by trimming or by deformation. This action of cutting can be achieved by multipoint or single-point tools. Drilling or grinding tools are often multipoint tools, wherein the body has teeth or cutting edges on it. Single-point tools are those which can be used for shaping, turning, planning or similar action, as they are used for removing materials by means of one cutting edge.

Cutting tools materials should always be harder than the material that needs to be cut, along with that the tools must be able to withstand the heat that is being generated in the cutting process. Also the cutting tool must have a specific geometrical shape along with a clearance angle properly designed so that only the cutting edge get in contact with the workpiece instead of the rest of the tool dragging on the surface of the workpiece. The angle of the cutting face along with the flute width, number of teeth or flute and the margin size needs to be taken care of. In order to have a long working life of the cutting tool all of the above factors need to be considered, along with the speed and force the cutting tool is being run.

Let us look into some of the varieties of cutting tools available:-

Carbon Band saw Blades:-

This is the best general purpose blade; it is the economic choice for utility and general purpose of sawing operations. These blades can be used to cut a variety of materials staring from aluminium and carbon steel to abrasive materials such as wood and fibre glass. These types of blades are widely used for light-production cuts, in small maintenance shops etc. Carbon Band Saw Blades are made up of tough alloy with high silicon content.  They have flexible back along with heat treated teeth and precision milled.

Annular Cutter:-

An annular cutter is a bit more expensive, they are more efficient and alternate option of standard hole saws and spiral drill bits. An annular cutter is quite similar to hole saws but different in material and geometry. An annular cutter is specialized for drilling through steel. It can produce accurate and burr-free holes that can be used to close tolerance without step drilling or pre-drilling. There are mainly two common type of annular cutter available tungsten carbide tipped (TCT) and high-speed steel (HSS).
