Custom thin film coatings produced by physical vapor deposition (PVD coatings) result in many different types of coatings such as IBAD coating, HR coating and ITO coating.  IBAD stands for Ion Beam Assisted Deposition and it typically yields denser higher quality coatings when compared to low energy coatings deposited without ion beam assist.

 

Vacuum systems employ different methods to deposit layers of material atom-by-atom or molecule-by-molecule on a surface. The process is called Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) since it is based on a physical transformation: namely that of a coating material from a solid to vapor state.  The coating material can be a metal or dielectric.


The IBAD process consists of the bombardment of the material vapor with argon ions in a vacuum chamber, including the possible introduction of a reactive gas in the chamber. The combination of the gas with the metal vapor forms a highly adherent coating, which settles on the target surface.


The result is a spotless, shiny and resistant coating, virtually 100% clean from any contamination.
